I made a new rudder housing that accepts a "Bravo" style propeller.

This will give anywhere from 10-15 degrees more rake than I could get out of a Speedmaster propeller and we all know the cost obstacle when dealing with the speedmaster propellers.

The Maximus will fit also and this propeller has 30 degrees of rake.

This will allow a smaller boat that does not/can not handle a Cleaver propeller to run an Arneson without being burdened by a cleaver propeller.

The drive will have:

Less Stern Lift
Less Side Loading
Reduced Listing
Lower, FAR lower propeller cost and sourcing
Less "Man Handling" from the propeller

More Bow Lift
Less RPM to get on plane
Wider selection of propellers
Lighter propeller (if that matters)
Improved reversing, as the blade is not so blunt in the rear
Better tracking
More Propeller Rake. 25-30 degrees vs 15 for a Mercury Speedmaster.

For a small, or single engine application, this was an issue to some degree depending upon who's hull was being used. The propeller cost and selection was always an issue. Now with the high rake Maximus, the Bravo and others the advancement of technology has allowed us to take advantage of it.

Rik,
It's looks like you may have a winner here. Can we get more specs. Plus a picture? Also, is it compatable the original Bravo cutout?

tomcei 07-17-2008 08:36 PM

Rik,
Does it still use a trans?
Please show and tell. I'm on the fence

Superbabi 07-17-2008 08:49 PM

Spoke with Rik today, it does sound as if he has the Bulletproof answer to the XR with big HP. :grinser010:

FX10 07-17-2008 09:58 PM

Does it bolt up using th e existing holes of the XR?

Rik 07-18-2008 03:08 AM

It's based on my same "Bravo Conversion Kit" so the cutout is not an issue as my standoff box covers the Bravo cutout.

Yes it uses a transmission, BAM so there is no problems with a cone clutch. No weak links.

I'll have photos in a week or so when I get it on a boat.

Rik, Did we already go through this before? Or does this unit bolt to the "existing" bolt holes of the XR? Or does it use a Bravo hole pattern?
If not............................. I should spend a few hours and draw something up on Autocad that bolts up to an existing Bravo, and patent it! Like an ITS with a dropdown in the rear to accomodate a dropdown box, around 6". Connecting to a surface drive! I'm a friggin genious!!! Why hasn't Arnesson thought of this? Just send me the royalties ;)
I'll give you 3 weeks till I draw it up. Then it's all mine, and you'll have to buy it. Just kidding. Make it happen!!! It should have been made years ago! You guys would be beyound rich!!!

Rick

That was an old thought. Problem is you would need a different one for every boat out there as we all know some boats like an X here, some like and X there, some like an X everywhere.

On some boats you would be running the drive mounting below the bottom of the boat so it is far best to do it like I am. Just mount our Standoff Box at the advised height for the transom angle (another variable that presents a problem for a fixed design). The box covers the Bravo cut out so there is no glassing concerns, and it is easy to install.

Once the box is installed the rest is plug and play. The engine is set by this also.

Superbabi 07-23-2008 02:07 PM

Rik, looking forward to seeing some photos and performance data on the new drive set up !!!

SUPERSTITIOUS 07-23-2008 05:34 PM

Hi, I also spoke to you when I bult my 30 Y2K. Isn't there an issue since our transom's are notched?

Depends upon how large the notch is. Majority of them need only a slight filler to allow the drive to be mounted at the correct height.

z.zuperboat 07-24-2008 06:52 AM

Where would the prop shaft need to be on a 30ft single to be correct Rik ?

Rik, does this help ???

Gary... Merry Christmas http://www.xpowerdrive.com/images/ML286XPower.pdf

Superbabi 07-25-2008 04:48 AM

Tom, that drive looks like the answer to all XR issues and big hp, time will tell !!!

z.zuperboat 07-25-2008 06:17 AM

Nice pick Gary !! You must have some really long arms. Or did you use your shoe cam from the bar days. LOL
I like the looks of that drive. A surface mini 6. Drysump with a cooler . NICE What prop shaft does it have ? If it surfaces like its designed to do your going to need at least a prop with the diameter of 17. Been their done that with the small diameter. NO GOOD Gary its going to be a long winter of choices !!

Mike, how do you know about the shoe cam ??? lol lol !!! The possible choices of out drives really seems to be overwhelming. Only time will tell.

Rick, if that drive hits the market place successfully, it will be a serious consideration for a drive up grade for my Y2K. I already spoke with Ron Potter, with more compression I can make 925 HP, without a blower !!!!! hmmmmmm all the possibilites !!!!

z.zuperboat 07-27-2008 08:08 AM

925hp HMMMMM, How many cubes is that motor ? Gary you know to raise the compression mite mean new pistons. Probably more than just a head mill. That drive has to run #6 props.

Superbabi 07-27-2008 08:25 AM

Mike, the motor is 605 CI. So the X-Drive is not a direct replacement for the bravo xr ???

z.zuperboat 07-27-2008 08:38 AM

Potter must be really good . I thought 775-800hp was about the number for 600 inches on 93 octane. Especialy running under 5500 rpm.

Mike, @ 925 HP The octane would need to be 100.

FASTERDAMITT 07-28-2008 12:51 PM

I think the reason for the magic number of 800 HP is the idle quality for Bravo drives. Consider the relatively small cam in my motor for idle. You can put a monster cam in a 600ci motor and build much more power but idles at approx 12-1500 rpm.

FX10 07-28-2008 10:45 PM

I don't care what you all say....... Babi needs that drive. ;) Babi needs to be Happy. ;)

z.zuperboat 07-29-2008 06:37 PM

With an idle that high Id be treating that drive like a crash box and starting it in gear as much as possible.

Superbabi 07-29-2008 06:44 PM

The Potter 800 idles at 900 rpms

FASTERDAMITT 07-29-2008 07:30 PM

Mine idles at 900 also.

Rick, I put a call into X-Power Drixe, waiting for a call back.

Pat McPherson 07-30-2008 07:30 AM

So G.
How is she running?
Are you whipping up on everyone around your bay?
Buy a spare XR and save the rest for gas...

Pat, 14 hours on the rebuilt XR, with just a few short WOT bursts, not dialed in yet. No whipping any one just yet, ( well a couple of bayliners ) !!!! If my XR holds up a spare may be the way to !!!!!:grinser010:

Rick, I spoke with X-Power, 35k

z.zuperboat 07-31-2008 04:48 PM

Thats a bit much dont you think. I heard the new imcos are pretty good. I think their low teens.

MDGperformance 07-31-2008 05:37 PM

At 35k there will be a very limited market, probably none they need to price it around 15-18k and get some out there to prove there product.Gary they need to send you one for free and run the crap out of it for 300hrs and see how it holds up,then they need to put a pair on a 36 offshore cat and really put it to the test, only problem is the stock gimbal will probably break and sink the boat,it does look like an awesome piece go ahead and get one

Superbabi 07-31-2008 06:39 PM

Mike, Dave, 35k is steep. I would think for most guys doing a XR upgrade the X-Power may be out of reach. I think the new Arenson is 23-26K. The Imco SCX 13-15k. Teague Plantinum 10-11K. Max-Worx 10-11K. New XR 7-8K. What to do ????

Rik 07-31-2008 06:46 PM

WOW. I list at 23, but I give you an entire drive assm, steering and such COMPLETE. Not just a freakin leg which is less than 50% of a complete drive assm and for all the prices they charges they still do not stand behind their stuff ?????

Superbabi 07-31-2008 07:29 PM

Rik, how is the new drive coming along ?? I would love to see the photos !!!! Gary
