QUOTE=Pat McPherson]Hey Guys,
The ZUPERBOAT had an Imco extension box with a Bravo originally.
That boat ran dam near 100mph with a 750HP MRD. I wish Mike would fine that HOT BOAT article for us...
I think he only changed it because the Bravos kept blowing up...[/QUOTE]

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Rick, ya think she can handle 700+? The boat that is. I never seen a Hot Boat article on SB's. I've been a member for 16 years.
I have 3 quotes for similar engines. Gotta talk to JC about installation.

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

I have picks of the zuperboat in a pokerrun america mag,but thats it.The only article on 30 superboats I ever remember was on the 30 Y2K with the blue and yellow stripe. With 700hp your cruising should be in the 70,s at 4000rpm and top should be low 90,s in the upper 5000rpm range.I think the new Y2K is around 5000lbs where the zuperboat is 4550 with the tank full. Some times just having HP is not going to help,ITS ALL IN THE SETUP.Last year I was at 85 with 550 hp.This year a best of 81 with 630.Slip went from 12% to almost 20%.Test time was very short last year and im hoping this year 2005 to be better but im not starting on a good foot.My new 31p prop didnt look rite to me so I had it checked and its a 28!!So that went back.I will hunt for the article.

FX10 01-24-2005 04:24 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Tom,
The boat can handle 700 no problem. Tom, is there a weight limit for the class you want to race. Like factory 1 is 4500 lb.

FASTERDAMITT 01-24-2005 11:28 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Zuper, I think I saw a post where you where running a higher prop shaft than normal. That must be what hurt your speed? I thought about an Imco shorty until I saw that post.

FASTERDAMITT 01-24-2005 11:32 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Rick, I did'nt read anything on a weight limit for the P classes. I would love to compete in the F1, until they changed engines this year. My last boat being over 100mph, it's hard to slow down that much. Besides you want me to spank some west coast boats out here don't you? :D

z.zuperboat 01-24-2005 02:40 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Rick I have a stack of magz in my den about 3ft tall.If you have some idea about when they ran an article on the zuperboat I will start to look. The boats a 99 and the magz I have are powerboat and hot boat and they go way back.I would think John would have any info and magz anyway.

FASTERDAMITT 01-25-2005 06:55 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Zuper, Any word on the article? I would be looking for it but my mags are burried in storage since I'm moving.
Tom

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Tom,
If you bolt in a 700+HP/572cube, and have an extension box like the Zuperboat had,
she'll be running near 100...
How about one of those 720HP/572cube GM crate motors with closed cooling added?

z.zuperboat 01-26-2005 09:33 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

I'm wondering about the article and what does it prove? Was it a non partial test from hot boat with radar runs like they do today or just johns claims?Don't know. The one I do have is in poker run and only has a picture of the boat sitting in the water. The article did say the boat was leading the pack and was capable of speeds in the upper 90,s.When I showed up at MRD with the boat they told me that boat did go 100 and that was with a bravo prop,no 5 blades or herrings, that was in 1999.Prop have come along way in 5 years.Their are some activators running 115 I hear but I know they have big power and are running herrings so I feel SUPERBOAT could be just as fast.

z.zuperboat 01-26-2005 10:06 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Pat I haven't heard anything good about those crate motors.I don't think the parts and specks are up to the marine environment abuse.I think where on the wrong subject here.Their are plenty of good motor guys out their but what DRIVE will hold real power for more than a season and work on a superboat?SpeedMaster/Arneson!I think if you go bravo type you have to expect to grenade a few.Ive never seen the activators personaly run 115 but I have seen them on trailers without drives.

Pat McPherson 01-26-2005 10:20 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Mike,
I do recall Jcap told me that he has gone through 2 or 3 Bravo XRs. And I also remember seeing broken Imco drive parts scattered about in your garage...
Thats why you have a speed master now...
I believe we have talked about this subject with Tom before.

Tom,
You ordered the boat with an XR. Do you have a plan when you go big power?

FASTERDAMITT 01-26-2005 11:25 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Well I've talked to builders regarding the crate 572 and it would cost almost the same as a custom engineto marinize it. About the XR. I had a Bravo 1 on my American Offshore 550hp for 200hrs, Then bumped up the boost to 700hp and blew it. Then went with an XR for 150 hrs and sold the boat. Now this was mostly lake boating @ 2-3's so I'm sure racing offshore will be another story. Is speedmaster the sh*t??

Pat McPherson 01-26-2005 12:11 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Well I think New Speed Masters are Big Big $$$...
Not too many mechanics that can work on them either.
What is Mercury hooking the new 600HP up to? I think a redesigned XR drive.
Is the new XR drive stronger? I would assume so if there is a warranty with a 600HP.
I would bet you could buy 2 XR drives for less than a Speedy and have some cash to fix the one that might blow so you would still have a spare... :evilb:

FASTERDAMITT 01-26-2005 12:26 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

I spoke to Ron @ Imco just now. He's thinking I should have a 12" box with a 3" rise. Than a 1" shorted lower drive. Total of 4"s. I think it's too much, what do you think?

Pat McPherson 01-26-2005 12:53 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Hey Tom,
The stock Y2K has the prop shaft 3" below the bottom which seems to be working well on Krackmeup's boat. The slip numbers are quite good with a stock 4 blade; 13% at 72+mph.
Jcap found that a 2" spacer and 5 blade prop were needed in his quest to crack the 90mph mark.
Mike had an Imco extension box on his boat; he is the guy to ask.
I would say that a neutral extension box would be better based on the fact Jcap's set-up has the prop shaft 5" below the bottom.
Did you ask Imco how much HP their drive can handle?

FASTERDAMITT 01-26-2005 01:03 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Ron said most people are ok at 700hp range but I think the XR is just as good personaly.

Pat McPherson 01-26-2005 01:10 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Oh-Zone is having his 30 rigged with the Merc. ITS.
What kind of set-back does that provide?
I wonder how the cost compares to the Imco box and steering?

z.zuperboat 01-26-2005 01:12 PM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Did Ron tell you that with the 3 inch raise box the motor has to go up 3 inches in the boat. JCAP has proven that the high X will not give the boat enough bow lift. The ZUPERBOAT had a neutral box and -2 drive. That put the shaft at 2 below the bottom.I spoke to throttle up about props and they had a good point. The more blades the less stress on each blade. That should be the same for drives.Twin small blocks stock drives=85mph.We need JCAP/MR WIZARD to do the math, power to weight thing. Lets see if rick has any info on the boat with twins.

Pat
The ITS has I believe a 71/2 in set-back. I don't know the cost comparison...

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Hey Oh-Zone,
I would bet your HP525 and ITS is going to prove to be one awesome set-up... :D

z.zuperboat 01-27-2005 07:48 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

The merc ITS looks like a mini #6 sweeeet. The imco with the stearing wings is outdated. Now motors Im sure you can get a nice 598 with 700hp for the price of a 525.

Pat McPherson 01-27-2005 08:49 AM

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

Hey ZZ,
Why 572 or 598 for 700HP and not a 502 with a super charger???
Jcap chose supercharger, you more cubes...

Drive Choices...

Hey Tom,
Have you asked JC what a speedy would cost?
The IIIA looks like the one for 750HP...

Hey ZZ,
Which drive do you have?

Re: How's a 572 ci gonna run?

My blower always has a headache so I feal your pain.No blower for me I like the look of the smooth hatch and to get the power I need cubic inch. Now for cubic inch, merlin head 572 and a dominator about 650-675hp and 598 merlin head/dominator 675-700hp You could up those numbers with aluminam AFR heads.GM 502 block have large water passages with thin walls so you can only make so much boost.Buy a real block and you can make crazy power.A big combo now is a 557 with the PSI mongo blower.Ive heard 1100 on pump gas and heard 1400 on CAM2.
Pat my drive is a #4 looks like a #5.6inches shorter than #3
