Exhaust angle 454 vs. 496
#1
Comparing my old and new motors, I'm wondering if the exhaust is going to line up? It seemed like the new risers have more of an angle. It could just be the way the motor is sitting on the floor. Does anybody know if the transom cutout location and angle are the same?

Dave,
The 496 is a little wider but without the captains call, you should be able to gain enough with the flex in the exhaust hose.
I changed the risers in my Pantera to stainless tubular like on the new 496. The greater angle makes up for the added hight.
Gook Luck with your install. I'm still tearing things apart...

Dave,
Just wanted to suggest that you take a look at the flywheel housing where the motor mounts are. They recently changed the flywheel housing so installation no longer requires the double wound lockwashers between the flywheel housing and the transom plate. If you put the double wound lockwashers in with the new style flywheel housing, the engine will not align. I learned about this the hard way.
Also, I thought all the new 496's came with the Gen 3 cool fuel system. ??

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the tip. As far as the fuel system, it has the cool fuel system, not sure if it is Gen 3? I'm pretty sure the motor is an '04.

Dave,
The gen 3 system is totally different, it's mounted on the starboard side of the engine and is easier to get to for service. It has a new cartridge type fuel/water seperator.

Thanks Dave, The mech. did have the lock washer issue. He took them out and the engine lined up. The exhaust lined up fine too. The engine looks good in there. The forward clearance was DANGEROUSLY close to not fitting. Now I have to figure out how to raise my hatch a few inches. According to mer specs, this engine is only 1" taller. NOT! It's at least 2-3" taller.
According to the sticker on the motor it was manuf. in Jan '04, so I don't now when the new cool fuel system came out?
