Thanks to all.The Sutphen in question was Freds at Trick Marine (Power Quest has it brokerred now)I was told the last time it hit water was when Parnell (Saber )owned it .The last two owners never finished rigging it (WHY).I have been trying (to no avail )to get Freds (Trick Marines) phone number. to hopefully answer the above. As far as the power in all three boats i do realize that buying USED power in the thousand horsepower range could lead to a world of hurt (esp in NJs 4 month boating season)but you only live once .

PS living in New Jersey and boating means that if you pop an engine this time of year (without back up )you MIGHT get it back by mid Aug.

you try parnell?
he's run 41s and this sutphen.
He'd be good for a comparison.
try to get him to post in here. :)

Unfortunately there's no one stop shopping to know for sure. Start with the HIN’s.

http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_database.htm

Verify that the HIN's and MIC are for the date and manufacturer the sellers are claiming. I’ve found that by doing a little legwork and contacting the builders they may actually remember the exact boat and where it went. If in fact the Scarab was built by Larry Smith he or a former employee may be the best source. Make sure the date and HIN match up with the dates that Larry Smith actually had a separate line from the Scarab line. I’d bet the Smith produced Scarabs had a different HIN than the Wellcraft Scarabs. The USCG site has four HINs for Scarabs built in CA and one for FL based Wellcraft. Rich Sutphen Sr. is still in business in Cape Coral, Fl or Ritchie Jr may know the boat. Sutphen had a big following in CT and NJ because of their NJ roots. Depending on build date you may have to contact Mark McManus or Bob Saccentti for the Apache. I’ve talked to Saccentti before and he was very helpful.

I would also pay a professional marine surveyor to check out the boat of choice before purchase. This site is also an awesome resource. As you get more info you may want to post it because I’m sure some reader may recall the boats in question. Good Luck.

Parnell got a good deal on it, then he took the parts he was interested in and turned his tripple Saber into a twin staggered and put the sutphen parts in it. Fred bought the boat after that it got it about 90% done and sold it. Fred's always doing projects and people usally offer him the coin for them before he is done and he always has an eye for the next project.

Once again thanks to all.LS Scarabs do in fact have separate hull numbers then regular Scarabs. The Sutphen is interesting.I spoke to Rich SR years a while ago.The boat was origionally rigged for tripples. When it left his shop years ago it was fine. The problem is we are talking YEARS ago .Since Parnell had it the last to owners left it derigged .(I can understand Fred flipping it to make cash but why didnt the current owner complete it. )I definately will have a surveyer go thru everything especially the hull.(since i have to purchase the hull, then engines ect there will be no test rides untill after its PAID for)

is this the LS?
