26' Sutphen
Does anyone have some good pictures of a 26' Sutphen they could send me or e-mail me? I will make copies and send the pictures back. How does this hull handle and ride compaired to other boats in this size range, my guess is better because of the fact it has no steps, pads and its dead rise is more than any other boat i've seen (26 degrees, is this correct)
Also I'v seen this boat with twin i/o's, twin outboards, and a single i/o, how does it perform with each set up? Which one is the best. I prefer a single i/o, just looking for some information, thanks Kirk |
Boxer
Boxer is a 26' that runs in APBA...fast boat...single I/O...see the link for checkoredflag photography in the racers forums..they have some shots from Ft.Myers earlier this year...
 |
I have some photos of both boxer boats on trailers at Sutphens place in fla. Will try to send them next week.
|
Thanks for the replies, bmf if you get a chance to send those photo's, tht would be great, thanks again.
Kirk |
I did a poker run on Boxer about three weeks ago. Boat runs well into the 90's and is very stable. The boat handles rough water very well and is built like a tank....Matt
|
poker run
Which boat did you do the poker run with P4-61 or does he still have F1-50 ?????? Fobes I agree the boat is built like a tank but a lot lighter, that is why the F2 was handicapped and had to add .weight to the boat, but was allowed to run extension boxes due to not having any steps pads etc.
|
bmf: I was in the P4-61, it has a blown 509" motor and I don't recall what kind of prop we ran. The thing about the boat was how well it handled the rough water, and I mean rough, and how stable it was at speed. The hull designis old school, no pads or steps just 26 degree deadrise
|
I have a photo of the motor with that monster blower. the other boat (f1-50 has a extension box/stelling) just wondered what ever happened to it. Spoke to doug lewis couple years ago about it. Lewis was part of team sutphen when they set the kilo record. I have to agree about the handling a buddy of mine takes my boat up to 80 and then take his hands off the wheel to show how straight it tracks while i head to the porta potti. Only met E. D./boxer once at sutphens place hope he is doing well.:D
|
BMF: spoke with E.D. about a week and a half ago and he's good. Can you post some pics of your rig? I just sold a 20' Sutphen with a big block and TRS, would love to eventually get a 26'....Matt

Sutphen 26
Built Sutphen's from 85-90,Have some Pic's and "old sales brocures if you want.....Your mail box was full!
WALT |
Hey Walt, I cleaned out my mail box, I'd appreciate anything you could send me.
[email protected] Thank You, Kirk |
Hey Walt: would it be possible for you to e-mail me any pics and info you have of Sutphens also, would be greatly appreciated. [email protected]...thanks....Matt
|
Stillcrazy,
Please copy me on any pictures you have. I have the old sales brochures but would like anything else. E-mail is [email protected]. No doubt you worked on my 1987 26' hull #719. Does everyone at the plant work on a boat from start to finish or do certain people only do certain work ie. glass, rigging, interior, wiring? KN, We were out this weekend in Lake Ontario and crossed a twenty five mile stretch to Niagara. lots of wind, and chop. With two kids on board you appreciate the freeboard the 26 has and the strength that is built into the boat. |
Sutphen plant
Sutphil
Thanks for your interest in Richies place. He is a small custom boat builder and in the days that I worked there we had two locations near each other. One was the glass plant and these employees laid up all parts for the the boat. You will be happy to know that the same people that made the 40's made your 26! From the glass shop the parts came to the finish shop where they were assembled by the finish crew.Wiring, engine setting, drives, bilge layout always same people .Attachments, deck, bulkheads etc could be cross over skill same with interiors except "teak" in your era which was a cabinetmaker. Remember Sutphens were custom made ,the highest production was 36 in a year.Got more if anyone is interested. WALT |
Stillcrazy,
I'd love some pics too:: [email protected] ..I'm a big fan of Sutphen..raced with Greg DiRenzo in Inferno/Spystuff4u.com last year and had plans to purchase her...but things (deal) fell apart.. thanks in advance... |
Stillcrazy,
Keep it coming, tell us more. I also have a 20' that was built in 88. Were there any built in Florida after that? What was the most power put in a 20 and what is the top end for that hull? |
Hey Sutphil: I have an old Powerboat Mag test of the twenty, e-mail me your fax number and I'll send it to you if you want....Matt
|
Hey Sutphil back in the late 80. Stuphen made a 20' with twin merc' 2.4 it did over 100. A guy in Ct owned it for several years used it in Long Island sound. Last I knew of the boat it was in MA. The motors where set up on set back brackets.
|
fobes,
That would be great if you could fax me (416)407-0516. boomer, That pretty much answers my question. |
sutphen
Sutphil
Built a few 20's in Florida but mold went ot Canada for a short time on loan then back to Jersey where Richies son continued producing it. He was a great rigger and craftsman so I expect them to be great boats. Most 20's went with Magum 454 and an "Alpha drive " Really! Pre Bravo Our mainstay was the 33 and 26 with 30 and 38 Usually "special" 30 was THE race hull .Fast if you could handle it! Pic's comming as I scan them |
Stillcrazy,
My husband and I had you guys build us a 34' back in 1988 and then in 1994 we took motors and drives, Arnesons, from the 34' and had them put into a new 39'. Both of them ran great. We still have the 39, with newer and naturally bigger motors. We have spent alot of time over the years at the plant. Great boat and great people!!! Linda and Ray |
Sutphen39
Hey Linda and Ray HELLO!
Just going over some old photos to send Offshoreonly buddies and have some of your "33" at the plant when it was coming out.If you have been around lately you know that Rich is redoing the "40" with a trick transom setup.Deck will depart from his "classic" Sutphen look. He's setting up for more surface drives too. WALT.....(I rigged your 33! Often wonder how they faired.) |
Stillcrazy,
Ray definitely remembers you!!! In august of '87 we spent a few days in Ft Meyers while the boat was being finished. Ray would hang at the plant and I entertained our children, ages 8 & 10 (at the time) until it was ready to be brought home to NJ. If you recall we made all you guys line up in front of the boat to take pictures, still have them. Good memories. Believe it or not we still have those same Arnesons on the '94 and they are great. Chris just called 2 weeks ago to ask if Ray would talk to someone about the surface drives. Hope you are retired and are enjoying life!! Linda |

Thanks for the reply.I retired ??but Was the Dry pits manager for the APBA races in Ft.Myers for the last 8 yrs. I am still working part time for Page Racing and assisted with "Spirit of P.R ",#44 a super cat last year and the "Equalizer".I still rig on special projects for Nortech and Thunder Marine. If you are ever in the area give a call ,Rich knows how. Old riggers never die ,they just........... WALT Hey guys,Sorry about Pics not being sent in JPEG.they came from Arcsoft Album and I didn't pay attention . |
Ray and I always go to Key West in november for the races. This year we will be there for APBA, if you are going to be there, let us know and we will look you up.
Linda |
Stillcrazy,
Thanks for the photos. The blue/white 26 that you have pictured, looks very similar to mine, only new of course. |
Stillcrazy thanks for sending the pictures. When did they change the deck on the 30'? and start making the 31'/32'. Somewhere around late 80's early 90's I assume. Is the bottom still the same. Do you know how many 31'/32' ? they made. I constently check the classifieds and have never seen any for sale.
Thanks Kirk |
Sutphen 26
Sutphil...Sent blue/white O/B and I/O Quessing that it's the I/O If date is late 80's could be same boat. Not many without just "stripes"Got more pic's of it if it's yours.
Kirk....30 was stretched by adding to original hull.Bottom was therfore extended but continued same line.Richey is not a fan of trickey bottoms although he has put a step in them at times.31 came about around '87-88.....Remember Sutphens are a low production, custom boat so don't expect to find them as plentiful as high volume manufacturers..90% of boats went to North East coast.Thats where concentration should be. WALT |
Stillcrazy: thanks for the pics, I still haven't been able to open them though (I'm computer illiterate). I'm sure we would all like to hear more info from you on the boats and their history...thanks: Matt

KN,
Here is my 26, sorry for the delay in posting. Stillcrazy has probably driven this boat in every configuration and knows which handle best. Stillcrazy, It may not be the same boat, but it's close. |
Sutphil, thanks for posting the picture of your boat, it looks awesome. Did you get your boat in New Hampshire, or was that someone else I talked to.
Kirk |
26 sutphen
Sutphil,
Great pic. Yes I built your boat and have pics of it in the plant and as it was leaving to be delivered. Tried to include them here but was rejected for file size. They were only 34k so will have to see what was wrong. Took pics because it was unusual for Sutphen at time.He liked WHITE and a stripe. Still a good looking boat. |
Hey Sutphen30, Welcome to the board. We would love to see a picture of your 30'. If you have any please post them. And how about some more detail on your boat, power ect.
Thanks Kirk |
KN,
My boat came from New Hampshire two years ago. Stillcrazy, Of course I would be interested in any additional photos or info you have on my boat. My email address is [email protected] if you want to send pictures directly. Thanks, Phil |
Sutphen30
sweet ride!
|
Sutphen30, That is one awesome ride! I saw you at the 1000 Islands Poker run. You were hauling some serious A$$. Why do you sit in the back seat though? If I had a ride like that, I'd want the sticks in my hand!
Are you selling your boat? I saw it on the web site highspeedmarine.net |
Hey Bill: good to hear from you its Fobes (Matt), I have a couple of shots of your boat that I took on the Fall River Run. Send me an e-mail with your address or call me @ 617-846-5550 and I will send them to you. Spoke with Ernie the other day, he is working on the Mastry boat, should be a real screamer, how is your rig running?..great looking boat, drop me a line when you get a sec...Matt

Sutman30, I don't blame you for letting the boss drive. That way if he breaks it, he fixes it.
Tom Caughlan I hear is one of the best engine builders on the East coast. I have to say, he sure can drive that boat too! :D |
