Those drives (and props) are way too awesome to not offer extra protection, my vote use the option since you got it.

I would look at it like this.. whats the point of having a drive gaurd on the trailer in the winter?.. or at all if your gonna take it off.

When I worked as marine tech I saw alot more boats hit while parked on the side of the road then while in tow. do that.I can't explain it but probably 2/3 of all trailer accients seem to happen when the trailer is stationary. The dmage that a drive can do to the car the rails may be amussing but the damage to the drive isn't. Also by leaving it off, you are not the one who has to be more carefull, it means you have to trust everybody else on the road that much more and I wouldn't want to have Just my opinion.

My rear bar was welded solid- I cut it out and fabricated some hinge plates to mount it in the same place it was originally- between the main rails. I have not re-installed it yet so no pictures.
This will give me the clearance needed to fold the back bar around a full 270 degrees, and latch to the port side rail.
I think also if I swing the bar around 180 degrees, it will face forward and I can then check the rear lights in the truck side mirror.
I will confess, one day I was debating on removing the drive guard. I needed to go to an auto parts store with my old dually (from hell) and got rear-ended by a member of the anti-destination league who was in the middle of a very important phone call, Obviously.

When I got back home I shifted my thinking to beefing the drive guard up, with rearward facing barbed spikes to 'detain' hit and run chicke$hits, instead of removing it.
