Class 5 Trailer Hitch
Just bought a 3500 Duramax to pull our 382 Fas3Tech. What is the best place to buy a quality class 5 hitch/ reciever mount for the truck?

Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
I bought a Putnam for my Ram 2500. I'm pretty happy with it. It uses 2" draw bars. Here is one for your truck for $170...

Hitch Biz is my Biz. Putnam makes the only straight tow 2" class 5. Buy a new one at any Uhaul on special order. Or Ebay... Or hitch web. You could also get a double receiver Torklift that will haul up[ to 17.5K off the double receiver. Putnam hauls 15K and m16 with Weight distribution, and has the ballmounts and hitch balls to accommodate up to that capacity. No one else supplies those capacities in a production 2" receiver. You could also could go with a 2-1/2" Titan receiver from Reese/Drawtite.. Capacity to 12K.+ more with weight distribution. OEM Factory stuff is way more $$ The Putnam is the best price. Torklift the best hitch and reese/drawtite the best name. Suggest whatever you buy matches up capacities wtih ballmount and ball. Good in Beaverton |

Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
Putnam XDR here. Search this forum. Recently did a pictorial of my set-up. If you don't need the seven-pin, just get a 4 pin end pigtail (available anywhere Hoppy brand or whatever), plug it into the harness T up under the truck and lock tie the flat 4-pin plug to the bottom side of the bumper with a thin spacer. There are some small holes in the bottom of the bumper that work perfect for this. You can barely see it but can pick it out in the pics I posted. and yes, I lost the rubber cap.
Sydwayz hole drilled his bumper one side of the plate for 7-pin and surface/flush mounted...nice |

Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
For my 2006 2500 Dmax I bought a Putnam XDR from Fontaine Equipment, about $230 installed. Check Putnams site for your correct part number. I thought the installed price was excellent. The factory wiring bracket had to be whizzed off the old hitch, and welded on the new one, and that procedure was included in the labor. It's obviously a serious hitch.....

Buy direct. Great hitch, and great price, with easy installation. It only comes with Grade 5 bolts though. I'd advise switching to Grade 8 bolts when you install it. It MUST be installed with the collars that ship with the hitch, so the factory Grade 8 bolts are not long enough. The factory hitch is only rated for 12,000 lbs AS A FULL WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION SETUP; so don't get confused. Overall, the factory GM hitch is a P.O.S. |
Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
I'm 8 ebay hours from a putnam 25182, need to go look at the pics of the electrical installs. Get that all taken care of and then......oh yeah, pick up the boat to go behind it. :D

Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
Rip,
Where are these alleged pics of the electrical plugs installed with the Putnam hitch? I did some minor searching and aint seein it. |
Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
just get a "plug in" (Hoppy is the common brand but there are a few) trailer harnes (flat 4-pin plug if that's what you want)for '06 Siverado or whatever...
it'll have the round plug with side tooth locks on the other end that plugs right into the azz-end light harness up just behind the spare. Route it to your content to your destination of choice. Secure it with zip-ties along the way. SHAZAM. 10 bucks...10 minutes... |

Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
The boat weighs 10,500lbs dry, plus weight of the myco trailer, plus gas, plus gear equals alot more than 12,000 lbs (which is what the truck is rated at for the ball hitch) Is this going to be enough truck to pull our setup? Also, what would insurance do if we totaled in a wreck?

Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
Ebay comes through, putnam 25182, $139 plus $28 shipping. :D
|
Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
cheaper than a boat, and almost as satisfying. :p
don't forget the 20K solid drawbar and 24K ball. it's only another few dollars for some of the highest rated straight-pull accessories you can buy. |
Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
When buying a putnam on ebay, is there any way to tell it is a legit Putnam? Dont want a knock off or cheap imitation
|
Re: Class 5 Trailer Hitch
I'd say that most of those guys have Putnam drop ship them anyway.
|
Ebay hitch came out of a place called Kwik Hitch in Michigan. Their website has the whole putnam line, hitches, bars, and balls. oh my.................
|
OK,
A little ride height theory. Assume a guy has an '06 2500HD Duramax with a shiny new Class 5 Putnam installed. Assume for the sake of argument said truck owner entertains dragging a 353 Fastech on an Eagle trailer. Truck has those sweet 16" factory rims. What should the drawbar be 2" drop, straight, etc.... someone should be able to speak to this intelligently out there   |
what's the tongue height of the trailer when the trailer is level?? oh yeah, and I DO have a 2006 HD2500 Dmax
|
straight. ;)
|
Just ordered a Class V Putnam reciever, 2" solid steel mount and a heat treated 2 5/16" ball. Reciever with electrical installed for $360
|
XDR requires relocation of Spare?
Anyone with a short bed 2500HD (2006+), did you have to relocate the spare tire in order to get the XDR to fit? I'm trying to install an XDR on mine and got up under there and saw that the tire would likely need to be moved.
Thanks, John |
I have an '06 2500
I didn't have to move the spare, it fit great... I weighed the rig Saturday and it was 18,600# w/ truck, trailer and boat... |
You should just be able to drop the spare tire to install the hitch, and then bring the spare back up when finished. My two Putnams did not take up any more real estate than the stock ones the replaced; for the most part. (One on 2500 Avalanche; one on F-350 Dually)
|
245 only is not a problem.
I know for a fact a 265 won't fit under a shortbox because it hits the rear diff cover not the hitch. just general info. |
a 265 on a long bed will clear everything, on a short bed the 265 may be an issue
|
good point. I edited my post to denote shortbox. and yes I've tried it 265 Revo on stock alum wheel= no go.
