I have 2001 1500hd with 6.0 if you remember in th early years they were notorious for the piston slap/rattle at cold start about 6000 miles ago my GM rep from the dealer bought me a new motor, but still don't compare to the new d-max by any means but my truck is paid for so I'm going to istall a sts turbo kit

I have a 03 pull my 31 Sonic and its fine. If your going to pull with it every dat it might be worth the extra 7K for the max.

Well it is hard to justify the extra coin on the D-max, that extra 8 g's will by about 2 years worth of fuel (truck and boat). On the other hand, hard to say that gas won't keep going up and at least with the diesel I can start collecting the oil from the restaurants and cook up the bio-diesel if need be. I've yet to hear anybody making their own unleaded...

Depends how things shake out, I've been talking to a few dealers but the 07 D-max's are getting scarce!

And help me out what are people getting the D-max's for? I'm looking at one that has a 44K sticker, but they've already got it dropped to 38K, Extended cab 4x4 short bed. Sound fair or should I push them down some more?

I had a 02 3/4 4dr 6.0 with a similar sized boat at the time with 113k , it was a great truck till the verry end (fuel pump pitman idler arms tie rods had to be replaced typical gm ifs bs). Now we have a dually d-max , personally I would never go back to a gas tow rig but the truck was still awsome, I miss that 6 litre exhaust note, but boost sounds just as good.I think the 6.o is a great truck that would get the job done but if u can swing a d-max ...do it ! My two cents

In my opinion, there's no comparison in towing between the 6.0 and 6.6L motors. I've owned both and the 6.0 sucked and that was just towing a dingy. Normal driving with the D-max is sooooo much better. If you buy used, it's only about $3,000 to $4000 difference in price. I bought my 06 cc 4X4 LT for a little over $31K.

Well by my math it would take 5 years to recoup the cost of the diesel via fuel savings. At 15K a year, the gas motor would use about 400 more gallons than the diesel (18 mpg for the diesel, 12 for the gas). At current prices, that's another 1200 a year, but so far gas and diesel have been going up pretty much the same. So when I only plan on towing maybe a couple times a year, I think I'll go with the gas motor and use that extra couple hundred a month off the payment to pay for dry rack fees instead...

Thanks for all the feedback guys, wish I could justify the diesel but I can't so its either an HD with the 6.0 or the half ton with the vortecmax.

If you have to choose between the 6.0 or the max go with the 6.0 in a hd I rebuild transmissions for a living you get a 4L60e trans in the max which is LIGHT duty, you get the 4L80e in the hd with 6.0, If your any thing like me you will probably put 285 tires on your HD your fuel mileage will drop to around 10 mpg without a trailer and 8 mpg with the trailer if your lucky

I've got an 04 ext cab 2500HD with 6.0 and 2wd. I've have 40K some miles on it. No problems. No issues with pulling power. I routinely pull a gooseneck trailer that weighs empty alittle over 4000lbs with and then put 4000lbs to 8000lbs on it. No problems pulling it. I did put a Corsa exhaust system on it which moves the torque peak down into the 3500rpm range. But other than that the truck is stock. Diesel is nice, but to me isn't worth the added cost and maintenence unless your putting 20,000 miles a year on your truck with alot of heavy towing. What are you planning to pull? If it's less than 12000lbs save your money and get the 6.0.
