One other thing, my mpg corrected for tire size (265's) is 13mpg empty. You have to correct for tire size because bigger tires travel further than is indicated on the odometer. Bigger tires also start to reduce your pulling capacity.

Have you even driven either of these trucks? I've owned both, and can tell you from experience there's no comparison. If you're worried about fuel economy, buy a Hyundai. If you want a truck to pull with get a Duramax. You can get a good used one for less than a new gas burner.
Oh yeah, if you do buy a gas burner, plan on keeping it for a looooong time. Resale is horrible on them. I had to write a check to the bank to pay mine off when I sold it.

I have one of the original 2500's.
A 99 4x4 2500 LT with the 6.0 and the 3:73.
Pulled my Baja 272 awesome,,, now we have a 36 Outlaw and it does just fine.
15 mpg non towing,,, 12 mpg with the 272,,, havent gone far enough with the 36 to give an #'s yet.

Is the 6.0 liter offered with the 4.10 rear end? I am suprised that has not come up the difference between towing with the 3.73 and the 4.10 could make a big difference. If you are going to go buy NEW and your decsion will be based on cost (most people do and should) then the gas engine is the way to go dollar for dollar. If you are looking for the overall best tow vehicle go to the used lot and find a stock late model diesel.

ive got one. it will pull less than 10k with no problem, now, if you are towing 12-15k, forgetta bout it....... mileage is 13 at best on the highway without any incline... they do run well at 2800 rpm though...

I had 2 6.0L gas Chevy motors before finally getting the Duramax.
I towed a 16k boat/trailer setup with the 6.0L gasser and I was actually surprised how it did. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. It managed the job, but I never towed up steep grades. Mostly on flat ground like to Havasu or local lakes from Phoenix. I also stopped for fuel often.
I didn't get the Dmax until I actually weighed the setup and was shocked at the actual weight. It will do the job, just not like the DMax would.

I think a lot of people are overlooking the fact that the 2007 6.0 engine produces more power and better fuel economy than previous 6.0 engines.
"Engine, , Vortec 6.0L Variable Valve Timing V8 SFI, (353 hp [262.8 kW] @ 5400 rpm, 373 lb-ft of torque [505.6 N-m] @ 4400 rpm) (LY6)"

I had an 02 with 8.1 and Allison 5 speed and it was great. Have an 07 6.0 with 4 speed now. No comparison. They both got around 12-13 MPG on the interstate. The 6.0 does not have much azz. And I really miss the Allison. My 06 Dmax/Allison 6 speed CC dually 4 WD beats both of them for milage and tows 14-16 K with no sweat. I love that truck.

If you are buying the truck to tow, go DMax. I've owned both (6.6L/Allision vs. 6.0L/4L80E) and when it comes to towing there is no comparison. The diesel smokes the gas motor in every aspect including fuel mileage. If you can afford the extra cost of the diesel up front, you will get that money back when it comes time to sell or trade. Used DMax trucks are like gold in my area. As for price, my 2004.5 2500HD Crew Cab with the 6.6L/Allison stickered for $42K. After rebates, supplier price, and GM adding an extra $1K to my GM card money I payed around $31K at the time. Take away the GM card money and it would have been $33K.
