V10 spark plug anyone???

Agree, time will tell.......

Wow, midwest fuel is sounding better all the time. Diesel has been dropping the past 6 weeks from $3.89 to $3.69 right now.
Gas has taken a big bump from sub 3.00 to $3.39 now.

I think dave nailed it on the head. I think people are getting rid of diesels simply because of the cost, and if they determined like Dave said it was the right tool for the job. Lets face it the majority of people tow their boat an hour or less probably less than half of the year.

I tow my boat 30mins from memorial to labor day and I have a 10k load, for that distance I will not say the eco outperforms the diesel, but does it match the capability yes. Now I did tow the boat 600mi one way last summer it did it fine, but would I want to do it all the time no. Any more weight Id probably be in a diesel or if I was going long distance all the time. The eco would probably be a great long hauler if your towing 7500lbs or less.

But you were also talking about a modified diesel vs stock, even stock that cummins probably takes the race but is a lot more even than when its modded, so really talking eco vs diesel is apples and oranges specially a modded diesel.

I think for a lot of people it has come down to practicality, for those tow in the summer your probably talking your towing overall yearly is 10% of the time so the other 90% of the time to ride in a brick that gets horrible mpg, and cost a fortune to maintain and run wasnt feasible anymore in this economy, everyone is trying to save some bucks.

Like I said before I came from a 07 6.0 and a 08 6.4 ford, I really think for what I do the eco outperforms the 6.0 at least for what I do and narrowly loses to the 6.4. But these days with diesels and the DPF along with the cost of fuel, the numbers arent working out. Last year alone I saved over 2500 in fuel thats almost my car note for the year, that doesnt factor in the 100 oil changes, 150 bucks worth of fuel filters yearly, or the annual 75 bucks into an air filter. Plus my insurance is cheaper on a newer truck. And its little things like parking the beast driving to work and not having heat for most of the ride etc. Not bashing the diesel but it no longer worked for the situation I was in.

I'm surprised the eco pickups don't do better mileage-wise. I know regular V8 pickups, depending on gearing, can get 19/20 id you're easy on them. But the eco is amazing for torque and power. The real key is in the gearing, and if you have a huge load, you need the gears.

I know around here diesel is an astronomical premium to regal octane gas. But last week gas was 3.45, premium gas was 50 cents higher, and diesel was another 25 cents or more per gallon above that.

really the eco is even with with chevy and dodge, minus what dodge claims on their new rig of 25mpg. But like you said it depends on gearing, I am sure a 3.31 geared chevy will do better than the eco, but a 3.73 geared chevy is not do any better than the eco is. But you take a 4x2 eco and put 3.31 ones in it or 3.55 your talking a lot better mpg. Ford made a good pitch about MPG in the eco, and I will have to admit had a lot of people thinking it was a class leader, which is still is on pace with everybody. But like you said the power is unmatched in any other 1/2 ton platform.

Got 21 MPG with a 3:55 Eco 4x4 on a 150 mile trip through LA to sun City. Not bad for a trip with a decent climb through stop and go traffic. I went the speed limit or 1-2 over. 4 people in the tuck
Its quiet and very comfortabel as well as VERY responsive when you loud pedal it.

I think the Dodges claim for 25MPG is the NA V6 truck with the 8 speed NOT the hemi. If thats the case the EB is the mileage king of the 1/2 tons that have an real capacity.

yeah you might be right on the dodge. Cant see the hemi doing that, buddy had a 10 he just dumped and that hemi was terrible on MPG.

People can say my diesel, which is not even a factor, and others can say my 1/2 ton this and that and there are certain factors where sorry ford is not the best in, but when you combine mpg, payload, towing cap, as it sits its the best platform at least numbers wise.

I'm sure it's great , but the truth about this engine will be in a used 10 yr old truck with 200 k on car lot . Pretty common knowledge that a Cummins is a baby with 150 k , hell I know many with ocer 350 k . Never drove a Eco-boost but have owned 100 + cars from old school 440 mopars to 911 Porsche and really like beating up on modern day muscle cars with a Modded Cummins and still get 25 mpg

Whatever works for your needs. Im not a big fan of dodge but I know those cummins are bullet proof and wish I had one instead of a power stroke. Gas and diesel are a lot different, not a whole lot of gas engines I would trust at 10 years 200k to be driving around let along towing, and at that point gas engines get to the point of so much maintaining I think it becomes uneconomical to run one.

Depends on your needs and the tool you select for the job. A lot of guys using half tons to tow 12k lb boats which is nuts regardless of what you have, but then you have diesel towing 5k lb boats, which is just as rediculous. Me personally over a 10 year period Im going to save 25k just in gas over a diesel, almost the price of the vehicle. Dont get me wrong if they have a diesel some day that gets 16-17/20-22hwy stock i might be back in one. I dont trust modding the new ones and in NY you run the risk of black smoke giving you away to state troopies. I can attest to it, buddy has a 09 f450 put a spartan on it, and the thing can hang with a lot of muscle cars and now gets like 17-18mpg vs 10. But hes also had turbo issues ever since.

i have only had my ecoboost for about 2 months. i have not towed anything yet. So far i really love the truck, fun to drive, good fuel eco., and very comfortable. i have had two dodge's with cummins, one that i bought brand new and one i purchased with over 100k and i can not say enough good about the cummins motors. the down fall is the cost to maintain these trucks, i spent over $3500 repairing the front end on the dodge last year to find out everything that was repaired was junk again after 25k miles. At this point, i was looking for truck that could tow my boat while reducing the cost of owner ship. time will be the determining factro put so far, i have no regrets with the ecoboost!

Wanted to chime in, I do not have an ecoboost f150. However I do have a 5.0 2011 373 f150. My friend purchased a 26 walkaround fishing boat last summer from new jersey. We used a borrowed triple axle steel trailer to bring it home. Assuming the trailer alone is roughly 2k pounds, the gas tank as we later found out was nearly full, 160 gallon tank. We figure all together we were pushing 8k lbs. With 3 large males in the truck we did 65mph for 3 hours and I was over impressed with how well the truck did. Obviously the truck is a 1/2 ton and I know they have there limitations, but the 1/2 ton truck segment is head and shoulders more capable then it was 10-15 years ago and if short distance 7-10k lbs is what you are trying to accomplish then the ecoboost is the perfect vehicle imo.
