Drove a Duramax Towtruck for three years (6500 series) and it was an absolute piece of sh%t!
No pulling power, and when you put substantial weight on it forget about climbing hills.
It rode like a lumber wagoon and went through tires like donuts.
My buddy has F-650's in his fleet and they run 24/7 without issues. (I shoud go work for him?)Mine was in the shop every week for something that broke or needed welding or replacement. Bad brake issue on the front rotors as well as they only have one bolt for the stopper. We drilled and tapped a second bolt hole and this made an improvement. I wonder why Gm couldn't think of this? The caliper slider had two holes???????
Leave it to GM to cheap out on thier vehicles.

By the way my three years as a tow truck driver...GM was the most towed vehicle as it filled 65% of my daily run sheet. Unbelielevable that good people pay honest money for what they believe to be a good vehicle and they are really junk. I was on first name basis with all the dealerships in Toronto.

On another note the new GM trucks 3500 series and up need DEF additive, and the Fords just use pump diesel, so that is another nuisense...

I will NEVER own a GM product as long as I draw breath.

ALL production trucks require DEF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking maybe you should only talk about things you know something about but then towing might not be it either.
A GM doesn't look good on you either, just stay in what you deserve, Ford.

So much misrepresented and wrong info above

Cant comment on the vehicles that were towed or the repair history on a particular 6500 topkick but......

A 6500 topkick is significantly different than a light duty 3500. There are many different mechanical components.
The 6500 Duramax is significantly detuned. LBZ was down 60hp and 130 tq. LLY is 60hp / 50 tq less. LMM is detuned by 30 hp and tq while all Savana vans are down even greater. This may explain some of the lost power feeling as they detuned to increase engine life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duramax_V8_engine

Both GM and Ford need DEF starting 2011. Dodge currently does not except in the cab chassis 3500. All 4500 and up do use DEF.

Very little of this post had anything to do with a 3500 dmax , just trying to add a little clarity

The 6500 Topkick and 2500/3500 are completely different animals and have very little in common. The brakes are not even close, the duramax is detuned also as noted. The Allison transmission behind the duramax is one of the things that makers this a GREAT combo. This is simply the best transmission out there for a diesel.

Ford copied the manual electric shift function of the Allison for their later model trucks.

I really like my Allison trans. The cooler line leaked, which several others have had, but the new line was cheap in my book. I replaced it and all is well.

My Allison is still getting an aluminum pan. I do that with all my trucks anyway for more cooling and capacity.
