This guy is about 20 miles from my house that puts the packages together. He said with a 2 in front leveling kit I can fit the 22.5s on my 2003 Dodge Dually CTD 4x4.

We own a few of each on the trucks and work them all to death...On our Dmax once it hit 80k we could'nt keep it together, still gets 20mpg but we only use it for light work and no towing. Personally I drive the Cummins(2500 CTD 600, 3500 CTD 555 Dually)but it is all a matter of personal preference. I have gotten as low as 10mpg pulling a 38' Cig(with almost full tanks  ) up to 17mpg towing a 32' Skater that you did'nt even know was there.

Cummins is the best built motor in a light duty pickup by far, and I am partial to the old Ford 7.3 :D

What broke on your duramax?

We took the truck in at 81k miles and now it has 87k miles and is used as a yard truck...We do work our trucks very very hard so I can assure you that had alot to do with it. When the truck was'nt pulling a loaded 40 ft gooseneck across the country it was used to haul our livestock or 30k lbs of Hay. Only had to use it twice to pull a couple boats but other than that it was worked very hard. Our neighbor has a kid that drives from Waller to A&M in College Station everyday and he has 160k miles on his '02 2500 Dmax QC 4x4 and has never had a day of trouble out of it.

Cat and Chevy/GM have been talking for years. The problem with the Cat is weight (aside from cost). The 3116, now the 3126 would be the prime 6 cyl platform, but is so heavy that it's not an option until you hit the 5500/F-550 (for the ford guys) sized trucks. Up until the last few years, Perkins was building all the small Cat diesels and badging them as such. Now, to be in the market, it would pretty much involve either redoing the 3126 or tooling a whole new light diesel to deal with the 3/4 and 1 ton markets. Cat is, and always has been, very proud of their prices. Figure the cost for retooling an assembly line, as well as the R&D on a new engine and you'll see why they're opting to not compete. $12K for an engine option wouldn't be even close, no matter how loyal the cat guys are.

Class 6-8??? Class 7-8 are considered the heavy duty market, of which the Series 60 Detroit has, and continues to, dominate that market. Cummins has a smaller following in the bigger on highway trucks, but I suspect it will pick up as the emissions restrictions will continue to choke the mileage out of the new ACCERT Cat engines.

As far as class 6, Cat might be in the running there, just because they have more platforms, followed by the likes of International and Isuzu (largest diesel truck builder in the world btw) mainly because Detroit chooses to go after the bigger OTR market, hell, they're ignoring a transit market that they had pretty well locked down and dropped the platform... who knows.

Cummins uses that ploy (for the most part) to jerk Dodges chain. Look how long they carried the old square mid-80's body style and let the truck fall apart around the engine. Cummins starts talking about a Ford deal, low and behold, the body style changes and Dodge steps up to the plate. Most recently, they were slacking and having quality control issues, Cummins starts talking about a V-8 to go into the Ford platform and Dodge takes notice. It would be an interesting fit, especially considering the new 6 speed auto that GM and Ford are supposedly working on as a joint venture. Look back historically, everything that Dodge has had a big push on vehicle wise has been based upon the power plant. ;)

I think the best combination of engine, trans and body already exists but is expensive. The Cummins engine with Allison Transmission in a Ford. You have to buy the F650 to get this package. Could you get this set up in 4x4?

You must have got a bad one, my 02 has 191,876 miles on it and still going strong. And this truck is driven by 5 people, all day long approx 250 miles per day.Jeff

Jassman, I have thought the same thing from the start of the problems....It was great until all the problems came and they all showed up at the same time. I think any truck would be in this shape after the hard abuse we put the Dmax through.

I think you are right on about the 3116 and 3126. There was a proposal to Ford a couple of years ago for a smaller engine than the 3116 that would fit in a light duty truck. It was not a Perkins engine but a new centerline design out of Cat. Ford chose to stay with Navistar. :(

I do not think you are right about the medium and heavy markets. Cat is not just in the running, it sells more diesel engines in the medium (class 6) and heavy (class 8) duty truck markets than Detroit or Cummins. If I get time I will post the results for 2003 and 2004 YTD. :D
