Pull Rig Poll
OK I will most likely be changing the Ex in the next year or so for a dually. I am a GM guy but as the EX shows whatever fits the bill in regards to year and price will be the choice.
A few requisites are; - I will buy used more than likely 2001-2003 - Diesel - Crew Cab Need opinions regarding to trannies, engines and so forth from you trucking guys also. I hope this will be an informative thread. Thanks for all your input. |

Re: Pull Rig Poll
d-hlaw, Did you have to lift your Dodge so the 22.5 Alcoas would fit? Do you use a stock spare and two different size tools to change the adapter and wheel? Doug

G....I love ya like a step sister pal, but ya gotta do me a REAL big favor. Get the mods to edit you poll for me. If I've heard one redneck come in my store and say "Cummings" I've heard a million.
CUMMINS!! :D Buck |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
Oh yeah almost forgot....
When shopping for your truck look at the entire package. Cab size, transmission, tow capacity, resale, and so on. This should help somewhat. Buck |

Just got back from KW towing the boat and still 0 problems |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
GM's Duramax is awsome, recently hauled a 41 APACHE from NY to Ft. Luaderdale I love the motor and tranny combo, I have had a couple of them. Ask Parn about Fords he runs them. I recently had to haul a customers 41 off the toll road cause his 2005 Ford PSD with 2500 miles left him along side the road in florida, not to handy. Next year ford will have Cummins power according to my buddy with 2 dealerships, that will help. GLH you can call me if you want, I towed alot with my 2002 and my 2004 has the newest Duramax and it is even better. If you buy used buy a late 2002 and you will skip the injector problems. My buddy has a 2001 4x4 crwecab short box with 100,000 miles and she is still pulling awsome, he just came back from the keys. His injectors went out on him as we went to the Ozarks in 2003, we ran it with basiclly no oil pressure for the last 200 miles and dropped the boat in and the truck off at a dealership and they flushed the motor a couple of times, changed the 2 bad injectors, changed the oil one more time and she is running as sweet as new today. GLH hope the Tiger is doing well, I'll be down for the spring run, hope to see ya then. Steve

Now that you brought up chips/programmers... I have an '04 D Max Allison with the LLY engine.. It just turned over 5,000 miles. I want to do a chip, like the Edge. What is GMs point on warranty if they find that I have a aftermarket chip in the truck??? I'd rather leave it stock if there is a real issue... The Hypertech programmer lets you put the stock setings back into the computer, and no mods are actually attached to the truck... Looking for your thoughts... I have pulled with them all... When it came time for me to buy my personal truck.... D Max... Ford seemed to get a bit better fuel milage, but their engine and trans reliability is a factor. The Dodge is a nice truck, but it's still a Dodge.. (Great engine though) |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
Tim G., if your going to upgrade , you need to do an exhaust as well ..... I have seen the LLY motor with EGR problems when adding "chips". I have one right now that we left AT THE CHEVY DEALER for 2 weeks WITH the edge system on it ,for them to figure it out . They couldn't ..... they also had no problem with the mods being on it .
I do think I figured it out though ... Have to do a little more testing to make sure . ALL MODS ARE A "GRAY AREA" with the dealers . just depends how yours feels . Most dealers install them ! Joe |

I don't know that DaimlerChyrsler would have up'd an agreement with Cummins that would allow a relationship with Ford in the same market. The relationship with Navistar certainly hasn't been problem free but thee is a rumor that a V6 diesel is back on the drawing board and rumors are out there that it may be with Cummins and not Nav this time. The other rumor is the 6.4 PSD for the re-tooled Superduty for 2007. Who's making that one? COuld that be a Cummins deal???? Who knows. Who knows, Ford has relationships with others, like Cat but with their medium duty trucks. Also, I've read in a couple of places, talk of diesel fuel cost continuing to rise which could have a huge impact on the light duty (our trucks) diesel truck market. |

CUMMINS!! Buck Don't finger f*ck me with details it's only a Chrysler OK!!! :D:D:D |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
Tim, It all depends on the dealer and who you know. I have few friends that have chipped and exhausts on there trucks and the only problem they have had was the faulty injectors. :D
|
Re: Pull Rig Poll
i would say ford would the cat route before sharing a motor with dodge... most ford dealers around here already are cat certified due to the medium duty trucks.

He has never had a problem as for the rigs running, of course if the DOT would sample his fuel he'd be in a world of sh!t but how often are private individuals trucks fuel sampled also Brett might want to chime in as to the legality of them invading your privacy by sampling your fuel. Any of you diesel doctors heard of this and would it work here? God knows heating oil is cheaper than $2.29 a Gallon. |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
it works, but that is just what i have heard, :D , i would never put fuel that wasn't road tax in my vehicles

Also seems I put enough roadtax in my boat! |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
I recently bought a GMC 2500 HD with the Duramax/Allison combo and I love it. It is alot more comfortable than my Ford was. The tranny is also a big help by downshifting for you---that alone is a huge safety factor.

Re: Pull Rig Poll
I have a 2000 F350 cc drw 4x4 7.3 with just a programmer and air box for after market stuff on it and it does great. I have looked at the new ones but I only have 70k on mine so I'll keep it for a while.
The new 600 hp Dodge is nice but it's not a real crew cab, grown people will not want to ride in the back, the older 555 hp Dodge the Ford will out pull all day. The Chevy or GMC I don't know anybody that pulls a heavy load with them but they do ride nice and don't make much noise, but it doesn't seem like they hold up well. I pulled my 42 Sonic about 30k miles, about 16-17k #'s and no problems ever, out on I95 in middle of the night I ran 80-85 mph no sweat still getting 11 mpg, The 50 Nortech is a bit too heavy about 24k#'s on the trailer, I don't pull as much but when I pulled it the 900 miles from FL. 70-75 mph, 7 mpg, still no problems but I wouldn't want to pull it a lot. I don't think any 350-3500 truck would pull that much weight for very long.I need a 550 or bigger to pull the Nortech safer. And legally. |

I think the chip and airbox will make a huge difference in my truck.
The new Duramax "LLY" is said to be 590 lb ft.. Some of these fuel milage figures I hear are tough to believe. My truck does the milage for you... I don't know how accurate it is... I pull my work boat nearly every other day (in the pic). Best I have seen is 13 mpg... Most of the time it gets 11.5 or 12. But yes, I like to move along... This boat and trailer are about 8500lbs. That hard top drags a shiz load of wind..... I think it makes a big difference at highway cruise. So far my best milage was 17. something... towed an empty tri axle aluminum to KW from Lauderdale last week for a friend.. The key is to keep the engine under 2200 rpm... but that's tough to do..... I have pulled with a few Fords as well. I was impressed with the new '05.. I used a new truck with 1500 miles to pull a 42 OL from IN to RI.. It handled it very well. Trans didn't work as well as an Allison, but the engine was smooth and quiet. That truck has moved three or so more boats since then, and I hear it needs a trans.... The 550 is great, but gets about 10 MPGs, no better. Top speed is 82 MPH.. Great chassis for heavy loads.. |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
I've had the opportunity to try all three of the above trucks on long distance runs towing large offshore boats.
The Dodge Cummins was a nice ride but fuel mileage was horrible, 8.9 mpg towing a 37 Outer Limits CT. to Key West The Duramax got 12.5 mpg towing a Top Gun, Chicago to Maine. It towed like a much larger truck. The F350 Powerstroke got 14 mpg towing the Top Gun and you could forget it was even behind you. I'm a big GM guy, but from my experience the Ford has it all over the other two. Kurt |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
If you go the Dodge/Cummins route , go with the 03 or newer. It rides and handles WAY better than the 02 and older models. Also it doesn't have the transmission problems that the older ones had. The only drawback is it doesn't get the mileage that the 02 and olders got.
I have an 01 with 65k miles that has towed and been modded since it was new. I get 13-14 towing my boat at a reasonalbe speed (65-70) anything more than that and it falls off quick. The only problem I have is I'm limited to how much power I can make because of the trans. As soon as I build up an after market one I will be much happier and faster. I love the new ones but just can't justify the cost. |
Re: Pull Rig Poll
Troutly you know more than a guy that owns 2 dealerships about Cummins in 2006? GHL ride in a 3 then make up yourmind, the gm's have really nice seats so you don't get sick of sitting in them on long hauls. Happy shopping, Steve.

Re: Pull Rig Poll
I have had all three; 1998 Dodge dually quad cab; 2003 Chevy crew cab dually and just got 2005 crew cab dually Ford psd. They were all good trucks, but the Ford is definetly more of a towing truck.

Re: Pull Rig Poll
Hey Boot-
I noticed that Edge lists a different part number for the LLY engine now.... I noticed it on one of your competitors websites... I thought I could buy a $300 programmer and be happy.. but it looks like I "need" a Edge with attitude monitor, exhaust, and intake... they want $1700....without bolting up the exhaust for me...     |
