Anemic 383 SBC
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0f505e7af1.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e357fd46ae.jpg Even though the 383 SBC that is in my 1985 Velocity 220 was billed to be a healthy performance piece with parts like a Callies crank, Eagle Rods, Sportsman II cylinder heads, Comp roller cam, Weiand Team G intake and a set of HGE 7114A with stainless risers free flowing exhaust. I have found that it is actually a pretty anemic engine. After doing some research. I found that the dual line double pumper Holley that was on the boat was actually a 600CFM. I ordered a 750 dual line double pumper and the engine seemed to like it. However with the Mirage Plus 25 pitch prop. The boat did pick up 3 MPH with the new carburetor...However it is only spinning at a max RPM of 4800 and 68 MPH. I feel this engine should be running at 5200-5600 RPMs, but it doesn't have the guts to spin the Mirage Plus prop. I'm going to pick up a used 23 pitch Mirage today, and it will have to be what it is until Tony Bischoff at BES Racing Engines gets his hands on the engine this fall. Part of that build will be a custom profiled cam from Straub Technologies. along with a set of Morel Hydraulic lifters and a set of 1:6-1 Harland Sharpe roller rockers. I have already set up the appointments for a new interior and a sound system. The boat is going to have the bellows, intermediate cable and gimble bearing replaced right after the 4th holiday. The red swim platform will be removed and all of the holes from former swim platforms and speedo screws will be repaired. This is a nice solid boat that just needs some attention and next season it will be my vision of what it should have been from the start. |
What comp cam is in it now ?
Is this older 2 piece rear seal style block that uses tie bar lifters or newer 1 piece rear seal block that uses dog bone retained lifters ? btw: straub can’t bolt a throttle body on a vortec truck. Be careful. Lots of peeps here can give better advice and BES knows engines way better than Straub makes some think he does. You don’t have to believe me. Ask his last engine builder Scott Foxwell. And that’s what i have to say sbout that. :) Oh, you won’t overpay from other sources too. |

Foxwell and I use to be friends before he screwed me out of a bunch of money and a set of cylinder heads among other things. Foxwell has also been booted from his last place of employment after Straub Tech and two places of employment before Straub Tech. I guess those gig's are Chris's fault as well...Right? Chris Straub never screwed me or claimed to be anything other than a cam profiler and a parts salesman. Both he does very well I might add. To be clear. I buy parts from Straub, and BES is my engine builder. That is why he runs a multi million dollar business and Foxwell is doing petty work out of his Basement trying to keep his property from being foreclosed on. Straub has profiled all of the last three engine builds and all three have been more than impressive. My advise to you is to Immediately stop drinking the Foxwell Koolaid. That is a no win situation and will cost you big money in the end. It sure has me. 2) Stop bad mouthing someone or something you obviously know nothing about 3) forget you ever saw this or any of my other posts because people such as yourself will not receive one second of my attention or time.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e640866c96.gif Holy fuk that’s funny. We’ve had our issues. But….he can turn wrenches….Straub just sells bullchit…… Me know nothing about Straub and Foxwell ??? Maybe you don’t know. Lol…… I’ll still help if you answer the questions I asked. May I suggest something with less caffeine and not KoolAid. Bischoff is top self. So that’s that. |
A 25p on a na small block and you want rpms??? Whats the dyno curve look like on the motor? That also doesnt look like the greatest exhaust for a bunch of cam unless you like steam cleaning pistons.. A belt driven intake manifold might help a bit.

Morel lifters, I'd suggest you do some homework. Maybe 5 years ago they were ok, but certainly not today. Look into Johnson or anyone but Morel |

Let me fill you in since it appears that when it comes to Foxwell and or Straub. You are clueless. Foxwell has been booted from Dart Machine as well as AJPE. He was on his last leg in CA. as a self employed carpenter when Straub hired him. At Straub Tech. Foxwell had full use of all of Straubs tools in Straubs building making over $100K a year. Yet again Foxwell wore out his welcome because of his severe narcissistic issues and inability to keep his pie hole shut. He then went to work at the shop where Straub Tech dynoed Foxwells builds. Foxwell has now been shown the door by the salt of the earth peopleat that shop that considered Foxwell a friend and did him a favor by employing him after his boot from Straub Tech. As far as turning wrenches. Foxwell built one good engine for me and I had contracted him to build another. However Foxwell wanted to dictate my build as to show up or out do another builder Rick Jones located in Colorado. I did not want another race engine. I wanted a pump gas friendly street engine for my factory AC street car. Foxwell proceeded to hit water while he was cutting the exhaust valves for larger valves. Instead of telling me about his mistake. He pressed hardened seats in to the exhaust side of the heads to cover up what he had already done and causing further damaging the heads by cracking what he had already destroyed when he had hit water. Foxwell charged me full price for the work he had done to the heads. plus $2500 to install the crank and pistons in to my block. He then ran everything through his current employer so he would not be liable. Once I took everything to BES to be looked over. Tony knew immediately the heads were junk and recommended that they be water tested. Both of which failed. When I contacted Foxwell. He became incensed and refused to stand behind his work. Foxwell and I were what I thought were friends. I stood up for him time and again and then he showed his true colors. I have sense found out the whole and true story of why Foxwell was booted from Straub Tech. For the very same reason he was booted from Dart Machinery, AJPE, Straub Tech and Performance Automotive and Machine, and exactly why this so called good wrench is now reduced to doing menial work from the basement of a house that will more than likely be foreclosed on. Foxwell is a Narcissist, and a compulsive liar. He shined me on for 2 years until I found out the truth. Something it appears that you haven't found out yet. I will now ask the Admin to remove this thread as it has been ruined and no longer needs to take up the space and wasted the bandwidth you and your two cohorts caused it to be.

You actually caused this thread mess. You got emotional.
Most of us here know Foxwell is a douche. Brutal one at that. I never said he was a good wrench. You made that up. You’re on Straub medication. We get it. Sorry. There’s a reason both where banned from here years ago. Let’s move on. What cam is in the motor now ? So we know exactly what you currently have for an engine and power and rpm range. |

I'm glad you had a nice chat with straub this morning. The odds that he paid anyone but himself $100K are less than zero. Based on your attitude in your posts, any engine builder would be smart if they declined to build you an engine. I see a nightmare for them. |

You said you let him dictate your build. Thats on you. Jones (voodoo pro) is a total hack. He sells crap on ebay and uses 20-50% dyno correction to claim HP. You were paying. you may not get to send crap parts to a builder but YOU tell them what its for or go elsewhere. Trust me, BES which is a top notch builder is gonna give you an engine that does what you need, BUT they aren't going to let you pick parts that they feel are inferior. No good engine builder is going to let you do that.

I'd like to bet you a Paycheck that Foxwell made $104K in 2019 paid by Straub. You can bet on that. The more you bump your gums. The less intelligent your make yourself appear. I don't get emotional. I just tell it like I see it, and to date Chris Straub has profiled a cam for my 565 BBC 69 Chevelle that has been 9 teens.
You have a SERIOUS emotional issue. You did too huge posts about foxwell based on your lack of reading comprehension. As far as picking cams for your drag car, big whop. My cat can do that. BUT this is supposed to be a BOATING forum and you asked about a BOAT engine. Neither straub nor foxwell are qualified to be picking ANY parts for either one of them.

Sorry you don't like people like me and SB and others that give you the real facts about posers like straub. As I said, do a google search for him and you'll see the facts. From every boating board to the Vette forem to multiple others. The horror stories are endless. |
Nice car. Thumbs.
What cam is in your 383 now ? |
I would like to apologize to everyone for how this thread took a nose dive and went to hell in a hand bag. That was and is never my intention. I came to this board to try and get back up to speed in the boating world. Now have a crap slinging contest with anyone. If I have something negative I would like to get across to someone. Most times I'll send a PM as turning a thread into what this one became helps no one. We are all unique individuals who have our our opinions about how we do thing and who we like or dislike. I personally would much rather keep things cordial and if anyone decides to be something other. I will add you to the ignore list. Again I apologize for the way this thread turned out and I'll ask the Admin again to please delete it.

0kay, that’s cool.
Now, the cam that is currently in the motor is ? And as RyanOOTJ asked, any massaging on the Sportsman heads done ? I have one more question - any thoughts about removing the Team G single plane intake and putting on a performer rpm airgap ? Edit in. Make that two: questions exhaust. The one on your engine i don’t think i’ve seen. Is it helping or hurting you ? |
The plan for the engine is to have the Sporstman II heads massaged by BES. Remove the Team G intake and replace it with a Edelbrock Performer RPM Airgap. A Holley 750 CFM dual line double pump carburetor. The comp cam that is currently in the boat is the one on the cam card in the posted photo. The cam going in the engine specs are as follows with a 1.6 rocker arm. 576/555 I/E, 271/297 adv dur. and 216/223 @.050. 106/118 centers and a 112 LSA. I'm not sure what the pistons are or what the current CR is. As stated the engine is supposed to have a Callies internally balanced crank and Eaglt H beam rods. All parts will be approved by Tony Bischoff before it goes in the engine but we are shooting for a 450-500 HP range and I'm expecting a realistic 475HP out of this combination.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a6e179fbbf.jpg |
Wait...you are expecting 450/500 hp when the motor is redone, and. your wonder why it currently doesnt want to spin a 25p prop to 5500 rpm now. You also state your seeing 68mph now.. Having a 22 foot 24 degree boat myself, that sounds about spot on for a small block making 350-400hp now. With a 330 I saw 60, with 650 and a raised X I have seen 83 Your expectations may be a bit out of alignment.

I guess we will all find out next season. I haven’t had this boat very long. I’ve been out of boating since the early 90s so I’m feeling my way back in to the boating scene. Im speaking to some very knowledgeable people to help me along with this project. I’m not much will projections so I’ll just wait and see what the new combination does on the dyno and how the boat reacts once the new power is installed. Thanks for your opinion and we shall see how close you are next year when the boat comes back out.

My 21' Hammond Challenger was similar to your 22. Both pad bottom light hulls.
My 385ci AFR 190R heads 10-1 static Cam Motion 234/240 .580/.568 112+4 Portmatched RPM Airgap Dry to transom exhaust Holley 750HP 475-500hp estimated Ran 77-78 anytime. 79-80.5 best conditions 5800-6100rpms. Labbed 22p Hydro QIV That cam is rather small IMO for your goals. |
What gas do you run in that boat? Tony Bischoff wants the new engine to end up with 10-1 compression. He also stated that the cam we are planning on using was a little aggressive, but would be a good choice. Honestly I don't have any etched in stone goals other than for the boat to be reliable and not be a complete and total pig. Other than that I just want something my wife and I can go out and have fun in. It will never be an off shore boat, and it will never be a 80 MPH plus boat as it will only see lake and river use. It won't be continuously romped on. Just a blast across the lake or down the river from time to time. I really want to bring this boat back to what it once was with the only difference is for it to run much better than it did when delivered with it's 260HP Mercruiser power which I've been told by the original owner the boat ran 66 MPH with that combination. If the boat will run 70-75 MPH honestly...I'll be happy with that.
|
Just keep in the back of your mind, things that are nothing in a 22' boat at 60 start to be rather intersting at 70, by the time you get to 80, interesting can become puckering really fast. But it is fun flying by some bigger "fast" boats....

As a note: 218 at .050" flatlines (HP stays flat) in power around 5200rpm in a 350. 5k in a 383. Many builds and small single engine boats with decent heads show this

This is not my first Velocity or fast boat. I've had a 23 and a 30. I also was an operator of the Cincinnati Fire Department Fire/Rescue boat. Though I've been out of boating for a while. I grew up boating on the Ohio River.

All were about dead even for speed at 58mph.. Back when we built them we spent a day with Mercury and a trailer full of props and a radar gun trying to figure why the 280/trs boat was so much slower than the other ones we built that were 260/Pre alpha Mr drives. 260/mr boat 58 on radar. 280/Trs boat 55 on radar. I think your 66mph with a stock 260 merc was a optimistic Tale. |

I just got a text from the gentleman that profiles my cam shafts for me. It reads as follows. SBC 401 Boat motors with Dart SHP 165 Heads. Offshore Fishing Boat....Cam was .530/.510 211/218 .050" Air Gap Intakes.... 9 to 1. Goal was to make peak power at 5000 rpm......You can post those cam specs for the idiots on OSO. You got more head and we are going to make peak higher... Also these were 9.5 to 1, not 9 to 1. My mistake there. For a man that according to some on this board doesn't know his ass from his elbow. I feel pretty confident letting him profile the camshaft for the 383 in my 22 Velocity.

And that’s all I have to say about that. |
The hull runs really good with a 4blade stern lifter like the QIV.

Well as this thread is a roller coaster ride already, it sort of makes me hesitant to post. But here I go anyways.
I've got no bias in any regards. But having a top notch builder as Bischoff do your work, why not just give him what you got (as in your existing engine) and your goals and let him produce? Whether it's a Humpty Dumpty cam or Mickey Mouse cam that HE chooses. Clearly he's competent to arrive at your goals. I've never understood going to these guys (as in engine builders) that do it at an extremely well level every day and needing to have someone outside of them spec what they're building needs. But that's just me. YMMV Be neat to see dyno results of what you do take out in it's current state also, if you're so inclined to do so. And when it's done. |

I have spoken with Todd at Hydromotive, and once the new engine is dynoed. I am to call him back with the numbers of what is made and where it is made.

You are correct. I've bought a set of the 500HP manifolds and risers from Stainless Marine. The manifolds will arrive first and then I have to take some measurements as to see what risers are to fit and be used. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1546f4812d.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bcfdb07711.jpg |
