4.5 should only be .030 over. You should be able to go to .060 no problem, if the block is good even bigger.

4.470 is stock bore. JE Pistons or CP Pistons can make any size piston, so if its already 4.500 and it only needs a little cleanup you can get a 4.510 piston. Just check ring availability first. Both JE and CP can supply you with file fit rings for your bore size. The original pistons are made by JE for Merc. As I said in an earlier post, You can get away with a few minor marks in the cylinder if you just hone it. Marine engines typically have some water marks from water reversion. The power loss from not cleaning them all the way up is minimal if they arent too bad. If you have long deep scoring from a broken ring then it needs to be bored.

Man, I feel good about mine. 3rd year with it (can't believe this is the 3rd season since I bought the boat from you already) and within those 3 years, I've replaced the steering to full hydraulic(actuator, or whatever you want to call it went bad), all 3 trim cables (started wearing from age), fuel pump (priming arm had aged wear and tear), impeller pump (seals went from age and spit oil out everywhere), starter (ignition stuck, causing the gear to stay engaged so that was more of a fluke). Nothing that I can't say would be abnormal on a 15 year old boat. Now the thing is like new

state, keep your head up. Once you get her fixed, you'll be happy as he//

Why can't it be salvaged? Was the bore gouged too bad?
