1984 38 Flat Deck project Hydrocephalus
So after deciding on buying a new aluminum trailer, I finally got my 38 flatdeck home, and have started the deconstruction. The plan is to tackle most of the cosmetic stuff this winter. The boat had been painted with Emron about 10 years ago, and has held up pretty well, it just needs a good buff and wax. I have just ripped out all the interior to be redone. I'm going to have it done just like it was originally, in my opinion you can't beat the classic look of the original style, and there are so few that have been left alone and not extensively upgraded to a more modern style.
The boat was local to me and the motors were built by Tony at CMS, here in Baltimore. They are 540s, bowtie blocks, Callies cranks, carrillo rods, JE pistons, hyd roller cams Edlebrock aluminum heads, estimated to be around 640hp each, the boat ran 68mph on gps with 6guys aboard in flat water, turning 5000 rpm with 26p bravo1s. The motors and velvet drive trannys have 30 hours on them. here are some pics of it and what has been done so far: http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...psd18060e4.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps97e29318.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps63223df8.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...psuwqdwiw7.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...pswtizuwa9.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...psyye6ga3h.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...pst3nigwzs.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...pschan69lo.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...psdpfronr0.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...pstuqhfiuh.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...psna4dzoyo.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...pstl3kzmfv.jpg |

AHHHH all the great memories!! Been there done that and still doing more. Good luck with the sickness called Flat Deck upgrades. Let us know if we can help
|
I really like these old cigs!
Great looking boat to start with. |
Did a bit of cleaning in the cockpit area and in the cabin, also found some speedhut tachs to replace the suntune tachs that were in the dash. I am in the process of 3D modeling some new dash ans switch panels to rearrange the gauges a bit and loose the boost gauges that are not needed. also want to mount my Garmin 740 in the dash. also got all the original lights working in the engine compartment.

OH BOY......
This looks eerily familiar!..... Good luck and have fun, try not to overspend. |
I feel out of place with my 35..... still a flat deck at least lol
I love that boat so simple and clean looking....I didn't update my interior too much but just enough, still looks like it belongs on the boat of 1985 to me.... good luck!! looks like lots of us have tons to do this winter..!! |
I really like the Speedhut GPS I have, good choice
So many options to customize. http://33outlaw.zenfolio.com/img/s8/...49040238-3.jpg |
I would leave the vacuum / boost gauges. They are a tell tail when things start going bad in your engine. I know where mine should be and one was off a little. I caught a failing valve before it took out the whole motor.

here are the some Ideas I had for the dash panels, the 2 large gauges in the center are the tachs, and the 740 gps would be used for the speedo in this setup

Congratulations!! Great looking boat and a real wave crusher. I like your idea of keeping it origional. You just can't beat that classic look. Best of luck with your project.

I agree with Mark 100% Boost gauges are how I run my T/G. When your out cruising and want to conserve fuel run negative boost or on the vacuum side. 0 and higher you are opening up you vacuum secondary unless your running mechanical and really starting to dump fuel. I run different props depending on water conditions or if I'm out to play so no matter what I run the same thing goes.
They are a very handy tool and once you learn to use them you will never go without. Good luck on your project and remember Do it right the first time so you don't have to redo it. It looks very nice. Doug QUOTE=MrCIG;4238817]I would leave the vacuum / boost gauges. They are a tell tail when things start going bad in your engine. I ended up buying a whole 19 gauge set up from a mid 90s TG, with boost gauges, so everything will match

Phil Lipschutz told me once while pointing at the boost gauge, "that's the money gauge". So true. The higher it is the more money you'll spend. Lol And it was the boost gauge on my motor that told me I sucked a valve. It was bouncing all over the place. Motor was still running "fine" except for the boost gauge. My .02. Keep the boost gauge in eye sight!!! |
Those Cadillac quarter panels have more steel in them than many of todays cars complete bodywork.

Mark I hope nobody with blower motors in a boat is running carbs with vacuum secondaries! |
