i run boat weekly - year round (FL) - I was leaning toward Fluid Dampers until I saw the above.... now I'm waffling. Which ones specifically for a reasonably priced damper for a basically stock 454 mag? Keep in mind these wont see 5000 rpms.

On an internally balanced engine should a damper fail do you need to pull the thing apart to balance again with a new unit?

The 540 ci 600 hp Volvo engines used GM dampeners. That being said, I dont know if they had issues with them.

I’ve alread had my 509 balanced with the flywheel and balancer. Is it possible to switch out the balancer at this point?

I was in the same boat. I was worried about the balance issue being an external balance setup. Took my new powerbond balancers in along with my original gm balancers to the machine shop. They were within a C hair from each other. Was kind of a waste of money, but at least it made me feel better when buzzing along at 6k.

That’s good to know, MT. From what I’ve read on the internetz unless a machine shop modified the balancer instead of the crank to balance the assembly the units are pretty standardized.

the factory gm balancer for your 5000 rpm application is fine.what happens to them is with years of use the rubber will break down, that can be a big problem.
