Unrelated note - I just replaced the Mercruiser flame arrestors with K&N 59-3362 flame arrestors. What do I do with the breather hoses?? Make a custom bracket to hold them on?
you can get them at any auto zone. Just have the part number handy. You can get that from the K & N website.

Thanks for all the advice. I HOPE THIS WORKS!!!!

Went out in Boston Harbor this afternoon - beautiful out there today.

Seas calm - some swells and wakes.
75 gallons fuel (3/4 tank)
2 adults

4400 RPM (200RPM more)
54 MPH on the non-GPS bouncing speedo (2-4 MPH more than before)

Not a wild improvement, but definite improvement.

242LS...Both the previous owners numbers and yours are low. I had an '87 242-SR1 with twin small blocks(270 HP ea)that I ran for a number of years. It ran a solid 65 MPH. Factory had it rated at 67, but I never hit 67.

Boat needs chop to get it loose to dance, as it's a tank. Also want to be heavy on trim to get it run.

Default 242 SS in Norway

Hi this is my 1988 242 SS 454 330 hp, nice boat great run.
Little slow, I would like to see the 50 knots mark, right now
it runs somewhere beetwin 40 - 45 knots.

Engine out for rebuilding. Soft transom need to do something
about that problem as well

I do not know what the US boat builders where thinking about, when they sealed the transom in the 80s and 90s?????

Despite of the transom problem I love my 242 and I am a true Formula fan

Happy New Year to all of you

Default Survey

Hi someguy a survey is always a good idea however if you purchase it with the thought that you may run into these things. Ask yourself this: am i willing to tackle this work or if i need to pay someone will it still be a deal. I picked up the big sister 272 this summer for 1/2 nothing with the mindset that everything is shot. It was ready to be cut up. It would have been a shame.I Have a 210 Scorpion thats my everyday boat so I wont miss out on any boating. I have been in boating since the early 80s I have had all kinds of boats including new which will never happen again. To me working on boats is my hobby. If spending the weekend under the hatch isnt your thing stay away from an 86. These boats were built with a life expectancy. most 86s are long gone to the recycling bin. There are exceptions but many had the cr*p whipped out of them. I look for a good hull with minimal stress cracks. good transom and stringers. I was lucky enough to have the gimbals off the boat to check the wood. Formula uses an inner liner which doesnt allow access to the plywood floor and abiliy to check for wet foam. Your surveyer wont have that access either. Moisture meter is a great tool. My 272LS is the exact boat I want. If you not thrilled about it you may lose interest when the boat is all torn apart with no end in site. When I brought my buddys with me to pick up my formula they looked at me like I was whacked. I will have more $ into this boat that I could have purchased a running one for but it will be an all new 27 foot offshore boat that will be paid for when im done. With the style I love. Best of luck on the deal

If I buy this boat it will be repowered before summer with two brand new mags I put together for my nova I bought last summer. I love working on boats just not the fiberglass side of it. I thought by shopping for a name brand boat like formula I would have a better chance of picking up something with a solid hull unlike my nova that is rotted from bow to transom. A nice boat is hard to find in my price range.
thanks for your info guys and happy New Year!!!

I hear ya on not being thrilled about working on the fiberglass but Its is kinda cool once you get the hang of it. Im a mechanic by trade and the thought of wrenching at nite when i get home sucks. Thats why the fiberglass or some wood work is a nice change of gears. Ive never been a sitter so learnin some new stuff is cool too.

Hope someone can help me out. I am looking at a 1985 242 with a 350SB. But im afraid it will be a DOG in the water. I offered 5200 thats with no trailer. Boat is nice condition and ready to go into the water. But im afraid ill barely get over 40 with it, Especially if i have 5 people on board. Anyone want to let me know what they experienced, heard or any advice about this.
