Little one is a 1987 F-206. I went to the factory in 1986 trying to talk them into all kinds of ridiculous things like a big block, entirely black gelcoat hull sides, hull bottom and deck (they actually did that in 82 and 83), different interior colors than the catalog offerings and of course a #3 imron. "No, no, no, and what don't you understand about no?", was the answer. Well the #3 imron "No" was almost a deal breaker for me and even my dealer was pretty pissed about it. Formula didn't want to trivialize the semi-custom work they did on the 242's and up by putting it on their runabout I guess. Wouldn't even take my $2187.00 that they charged to put imron on a 242 or 272. We put our heads together with the dealer and they put me in touch with the fellow that had been repairing and touching up the dealers bigger boats with imron (when someone decided to take down a piling while pulling into a slip or something). Three and a half weeks after the boat came in on the hauler they delivered to me the only F206 that had imron done on it. The painter only charged me $1200.00 Of course by then a couple of Formula big wigs had heard about this project from the dealer and they sent the regional sales guy and the then corporate sales manager, Glen Conkling, out to the dealer to take a look at it before I picked it up. Some pics were taken back to the factory and lo and behold the F-206 had imron paint options the following year. What's with that? Anyhow, this boat has been great. Not one stress crack. And even with the ZZ4 it really gets good gas mileage, especially considering it runs at near wide open throttle all the time. Don't know what my problem is when I get in that boat but I love going nuts in it.
So Cuda, after seeing the pics of Poorsche's 357 I'm thinking... outboard bracket, 4 merc 250's, and a tuna tower like that for the ole F402. Funny how the front quarter shot and the rear quarter shot shows how that tower can slide forward and back on the boat. What an excellent option! Poorsche, is that for weight distribution or what? You Florida guys have all the cool fishing gear. :D

Formula Outlaw---

The Radar Arch was enough for me--the tuna tower is on a boat right next to mine on the adjacent work rack.

I went a little nutzoid with electronics so the radar and did some fishing (but not a tower) in the Redneck Riviera (Koonass Kancun) when I lived up there.

Alj, seeing a 206 is what got me started down this road of lunacy. I was coming in from fishing in my CC, heading straight into a stiff chop. I saw this boat go flying by me, just slicing through the water. When I got to the boat launch, I went over to see what it was. It was a 206. I had never seen a boat that size ride so well in a chop. I had to have one. Instead, I started of with an F20 SC. I wasn't sure I'd like this kind of boating, so I didn't want to get off the amount of money that a 206 was commanding. I'm pretty sure the F20 and the 206 have the same hull.

Re: Post pictures of your formula!!!

Cuda,
I had a wellcraft 180xl and all the buzz in 1986 and 1987 was the "mini-offshore" boats. Scarab 1, F206, Velocity, Chapparel, etc. Formula got Powerboat mags boat of the year for the 206. Compared them all but had to have the Formula. Time truly has shined well on my 206 as well as all our old birds. The design really doesn't age poorly. Don't think you can say the same for some of the other manufacturers. This thing really handles rough water extremely well but I'm not 28 years young any more. Ridden in too many big boats not to prefer a less bouncy ride. The 206 is a kick though. Holeshot is great and it is surprisingly fast. It gets a little kinky though as you approach 70mph. Not much hull in the water at that point. But truly a blast.

Oops, I see you had already answered the above question. Did you have to do anything to the Z24 before installing it in the boat?

Re: Post pictures of your formula!!!

Actually a Z24 is a chevy cavalier I tink! A ZZ4 is a small block GM performance parts crate motor. Mostly same specs as a 1970 1/2 LT-1. Very cool parts for very little money. Cuda, the one thing to remember with this motor is that a ZZ4 has to be run in fresh water or with closed cooling. I run in fresh water only. Reason - aluminum heads and intake. As far as changes made it really works well in the marine world. Cam profile was ok but reversion was an issue. I needed to put headers and tailpipes on it. Went with IMCO polished "manifolds" and some custom tailpipes that dump water near the transom. After that, just installed all the mercruiser engine accessories: quadrajet, alternator, fuel pump, merc electronic ignition, power steering, starter, etc. Had to slightly tune the distributor and the carb needed a little going through. Not one problem. I ordered this boat from Formula with the "performance package" ( 2" higher X dimension and a 3 blade 23pitch cleaver.) With the 350 mag it ran 4800 to 4900 rpm and I saw around 62 or 63 mph. ZZ4 turns 5600 rpm and on a 60 degree day with 1/3 tank o gas, and a slight chop it does 72 mph or so. Total investment of $2850.00 plus tax on the motor (friend at GM) and about $1900.00 for the IMCO parts. And as long as you tell them your ZZ4 was installed in your 1973 camaro you get a one year warranty. These crate motors are really a total bargain. Just check out the specs on those new ZZ572's! :D

Dang, I guess it's time to go up one step on my glasses. :)

I checked out the ZZ motors. I might need a new motor for my Donzi. I have a noise that the mech says sounds like a rod, but it doesn't sound like a rod to me.

Re: Post pictures of your formula!!!

So what are the specs on the ZZ572????

alj 10-30-2004 10:48 AM

Re: Post pictures of your formula!!!

There are two versions of the ZZ572.
ZZ572-620 ... 620 hp @5500 650 ft lbs @4500; 9.6:1 comp. All Bowtie components. 850 cfm king demon carb; Hydralic roller cam, HEI ignition; runs on 92 octane......$12999.00
ZZ572-720....720 hp @ 6250; 685 ft lbs @4500; 12:1 comp.; all Bowtie components; 1095 king demon carb; Mechanical roller cam; HEI ignition; needs race gas;........$13999.00

these things are complete motors! Powerboat had a column written about these motors a month or two back. Basically they said the 720hp wasn't practical for most everyday boating but the 620hp was nearly perfect. The only mods they recommended were to CHECK the cam to see if it will work in your app. Cam that comes with it may work but reversion must be considered. Bravo owners take heed on that. You need to dump water way behind the headers like you would find on a transmission boat. Otherwise they even liked the cam in this motor. Carb and ignition must be changed out to marine versions. Fresh water only or go to closed cooling. The heads, intake, and even the water circulating pump are aluminum. For a brand new bolt in motor, I don't think anything touches the price. And, if you are really freindly with the owner of your local Chevy dealer you will probably be shocked at the dealer cost on this engine. Prices above are FULL LIST!

Formula Outlaw 10-30-2004 05:52 PM

Re: Post pictures of your formula!!!

That is a hell of a price for that power. I would expect people to jump on that. I'm surprise someone hasn't started "marinizing" that motor already and selling as a "ready to drop in" unit. Sounds like it's about half the price of what most builders charge.

Thanks for the info.

Forth summer on mine also. I have done a ton of work as well. I was wondering if your 357 came with the original Exhaust. I think it was hardin p3 with the stainless tailpipes thru the transem into switchable mufflers. I currently have warmed over 454's about 450hp running labbed 16.5" x 26p 4 blades. I can turn the engines to 5300rpm and am seeing mid to upper mid 60's. I am toying with the thought of putting blowers on or going with big cubes. One way or the other I want to see upper 70's. May as well put the hp to these Kamma's.

Re: Post pictures of your formula!!!

Yea that exhaust replacement is lightning marine. We really don't max the boat too much just like the higher cruising speed. Unfortunately also we had a bearing go in one of the Kaama's late year so going through those this winter. We are running rolla props 17"x29 @5600
Your boat looks sweet & upper 60's is no slouch these things aren't the most efficient but still look great & plenty of room. We also gutted the interior and updated......the work never ends!

Most of the bearings are over the counter. I replaced mine two years ago. Both sides for under $200.00. I bet those rollas set you back a few bucks huh. It makes playing the prop game an expensive ordeal. Thanks for posting it's nice to have something to shoot for. And you are correct about the work never ending.

Glad everyone had a good time, too bad the weather changed for Sunday. It was blowing bad down here Sunday morning, and while I was still all but out from the food poisioning I couldn't help thinking that I'd hoped it wasn't blowing like that up on the St. Johns cause that would screw up the "radar runs".

Mother Nature just hasn't cooperated at all this year for boating. OPBA had 3/4 major activities cancelled because of weather. Our Christmas party is going to be "all out" to try to make up for the lousy summer. Any OPBA members should RSVP to Erturk asap. It's going to be a good one.

Am eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new class "wife training 101" taught by Professor Cuda. Will warn you now, mine will be the "Mt. Everst" of wives to train.:D

Re: Post pictures of your formula!!!

Dave--
I have an aluminum platform powder-coated to match. I had a wood platform before that. I don't have prop guards either. Just have to be careful back there. I wish I would have gotten a deeper platform. Mine is 20" and I wish I would have gone with 24". I bought mine used. I know Extreme Marine has a template for 357 Formulas. Their platforms are the bomb!! I had a quote of $1700.00. I wish I would have gone that route.

Love the Kaama color. That looks killer!! Did you remove the drives and tabs to do that? I was also wondering if you had to drill new holes in your transom for the exhaust? I know my exhaust has 3.5" tailpipes into switchable tips. It is original and I hate it. I want to go with full time silencers and not have to dick with this air system anymore. The bad thing is that the original tips are bolted(4 bolts each) into the transom and I'm afraid I will have to do glass work to replace them.
Thanks
