Why do hulls have "steps" in them?

They also drop your angle of attack, in turn moving your center of gravity forward, which is why you have to be careful about the ass sliding out in a turn if you don't pay attention to your tabs! I don't want to find out what that's like!

You get lift on the edges just as you do with the chine. When you have a lot of these edges around your boat, it adds lift to the hull. The angle of attac is constant given the height and angle of the three hulls that run after each other. Therefor, it is not meant that you should trim your drives up to get lift. The hull takes care of this by itself. It makes a lot for the ruff water capabilities. If you have a 27 Fever, you might have to trim your drive a bit anyway. When approaching high waves adjust it down slightly (but NOT too much). This boat is single stepped.
They also sets you apart from others whose boats dont have steps... :-) Fountain is probably the best on this. 90 mph whith a 35 LGT with staggered 496HOs would be impossible in people's minds 5 years ago! Without steps in that configuration and same weight, 75 mph would likely be your speed! It also alows the props to run higher, because the propulsion is not what give you lift. When rising the props, you loose bow lift.
