Heiko,

I used to own a 29' and used to talked to Kirk the owner fairly regularly. Last I heard from him (June), he had moved out of his facility and was looking to move into a new larger production facility. He had put all the molds and equipment in storage and was rigging a few boats he had already laid up. I hope he actually does this because they are great boats. My only concern is that he is involved in his family business (ornamental ironwork I believe) and Kryptonite was a second business. Along with the 23, 27, and 29, he built one 39' sit down, and a 36' center console and had some new molds built for variations of those two.
I always thought he fell short of taking it to the next level by not marketing enough. He never updated the website and now that is not even active. The 27/29 is probably one of the best single engine off-shore boats ever built with multiple National and World F-1 championships.

Hey Tom was the 39 an original hull or what was it molded from, just curious. They are very nicely built boats thats for sure.

I have meet the builder on several occasions, as well as has a change to drive the Typhoon F1 (white boat) shortly after Randy purchased it. I was very impressed with the boat, and how well it was balanced.

frogger1403 11-27-2007 01:16 PM

i had a look to his boats via archive.org and thought the 29 looks like a Hustler Cheetah.

Where does the 27/29 come from?

Heiko

Sean 11-27-2007 01:24 PM

21 Superboat

berns29scarab 11-27-2007 01:37 PM

i had Tom A's 29 at my place and it was brought to my attention that
it was very much like a 29 Excel Scarab. I have to agree it is suspiciously close :D

From what I was told, the 27 was its own design. The Kryptonite has an 8' beam while the Superboats are 7'. The 29' is a 27 w/ an integrated swim platform, and the 23' is a plugged version of the 27. I believe the 39' was also its own design as was the 36. I had been to the old plant a few times before and after I bought my 29 and I remember one time seeing the brand new mold for the 36'.
The 23,27 and 29 all have a single step and a notched transom. The 39 had multiple steps and a notch and the 36 was a straight bottom w/ notch.
I still would like to see a 39 sit down with a stretched 29' deck on it.
I don't like the lines of the 39' deck.

Hate to disagree Tom, but I've seen the original plug for the 27. It is a 21 Superboat bottom with tons of faring work done to the hullsides.

The 39 came from a 41 Apache mold and Kirk made an insert for the steps. That mold came from the left coast and had only 1 piece pulled from it...and that boat is in LOTO now. Anyone care to guess which boat it is?

TeamSaris 11-27-2007 02:56 PM

Kirk builds one hell of a boat.Best in its class. Here is a vid I took of one while we were testing.850 hp got a us a very stable 100mph rocketship.Sorry about the quality

White Lightning.......I think it was build in the north left corner...... Do I win a prize......

Tom A. 11-27-2007 03:54 PM

Sean you are correct. The mold came from a modified plug making the mold itself unique to Kryptonite. I assumed you meant it was a stretched mold, sorry. I am going off my memory from about four years ago so bear with me :D

I've always liked the 23' Kirk made. He built one with a cut down deck that looked really cool. The 23 even had a small cabin in the regular version. I'll try and find some pics. With a bracket on the back and an O/B, it was a very functional little rig. :drink:

DPT MOTORSPORTS 11-27-2007 06:19 PM

Kirk builds a great boat and the record of the Typhoon racing team shows it. It is no secret that Kirk once worked for John at Superboat. I was told that the 27 Kryptonit is a 21 Superboat from where the step begins forward. Either way it was always a great performer and still is today.

Pt , He was not talking about John R. 's boat he was talking about a one off 41 Legend that was built from a 41 Apache mold. That boat was also called white lightning. Tom

kryptonites are a very sound boat. kirk is a very talented individual. the layup and straightness are impecable.
it is a21 super stretched , widened , and modified. the first boat was raced under the name great bay. the second was called xcellerator. the third was the original typhoon. i rigged about 12 of these boats both as an employer for kryptonite and on my own as he would send the customers over for the rig, in both singlei/o, single o/b or twin outboard.
the "mold" for the 39 HOT ROCK is the other brand similiar to apache( i forget the name). the original plug made for the 27 is still around as it was maid up and laid up by kirk , and his at the time glass guy who is now building predator cats.

he is still around , as is kryptonite. he is iun fact relocating to another facility and setting up shop. it is his passion and will allways be.

I know the Xelorater boat very well.Great Guys. I always though that twin 500hp Sbc's would be a bad ass package in a 29

Alright I admit I stupid. How do you stretch, widen, plug a mold. I am sure you know what you are talking about but I don't and was just wondering.

Thats the one I was talking about as well. Kirk took that boat back from the dealer that was trying to sell it. I called him about it, but he wanted more than the dealer. It is one cool looking rig. I would paint one up like a Glad.

use an exhisting hull and cut away. add to it , cut it in half length or width wise. pop a small insert plug in it to add a step. or 2 or 3.
beauty about fiber glass is that it is like working with glue and paper or wood and with some imagination and knowledge you can create almost anything.

dwtinc 11-28-2007 10:38 PM

Do they use an actual boat and do it with? I thought that boats was made in molds and laid. I thought the molds was metal.

Jigsaw89 11-28-2007 11:11 PM

dwtinc, there are a few threads in the Superboat forum if you want to see pictures of how a boat is constructed from start to finish. FX10 is the lead builder at Superboat and a member of OSO. Check it out.

How do the Kryptonite's (specifically the 29) handle the rough water?

Thanks Jigsaw I will check it out.

Incredible! :evilb:
I used to run in some really snotty stuff and still hang with the big boys. It liked a little tab in big seas to fly level but it never did anything unexpected. I had one day in a poker run where we had an inconsistant 3-4 foot chop in Barnegat bay where I set the tabs and trim and was able to maintain a consistant 65-70mph and ended up passing most of the twin engine 525 boats. They would run up to 75/80 fly off a wave back down and repeat where I was just knifeing through. I pizzed off one guy so bad he sold his 525 boat for a big powered Cigarette!:D

29 and 27 are essentially the same boat. The 29 has a swim platfrom. They are one of the best rough water boats in there class.Very Well Balanced

Big Time 11-29-2007 04:47 PM

Thanks guys. Yeah now that my Scarab is sold, I'm looking at single engine 27-30 footers. Want a fast hull, but don't want to get my as$ kicked in the rough stuff. I always liked the way they looked too! Also looking at the 30 Activator. Anyone ever try to compare those two (assuming they have the same power/rigging)?

Tom A. 11-29-2007 05:40 PM

The rigging was beautiful on my Krypt and the fit and finish was above average to very good.
My only negative is that they are not nationally well known and it took a while to sell mine. If you are looking to keep it for a while then I would highly recomend buying a Kryptonite. If you plan on selling in a few years then you may want a more well known brand. Kryptonite, Activator, Superboat, etc. are all well known and respected in these circles, however most pleasure boaters only know the big names.
