Has anybody ever been on a Cig 50 Marauder(SP) w/ trips like has been at the Miami show the last couple years???

Comanche3Six 08-11-2008 08:41 PM

47 Apache......sorry have no rough water pics

LapseofReason 08-11-2008 09:02 PM

What the wet lbs. of a trip 47 Apache. I Know A older 50 Nortech is 20-21k depending on fuel and I could run 85+ mph in any normal water under 10 feet with a 98-100 top end in some nice 3 foot chop.

BillR 08-12-2008 06:45 AM

Where is Sydwayz???

My guess is any recent ride like that would not bode as well as those "resin buckets" after repeat Ocean pounding like the Apache video.

Parnell has kept putting in glass to reinforce his Saber 41 (essentially the same as an Apache) in order for it to withstand the pounding he dishes out to it in Lake Michigan and Florida.

I have seen him jump (we were running along in our Tiger) in Florida off of South Beach the wave of a 70' Sport fisherman, he was without a doubt at least 20' feet in the air running about 75 mph. I would not of tried that with anything built lightweight for speed on 2" chop these days, my guess is a lot of them would of folded in half.

Just my humble opinion.

DareDevil 08-12-2008 10:34 AM

I think from the older boats, BERTRAM 38 COMP. They beat any APACHE out there in real ruff water.

uhhh?............. Ummm?........... no.

The Bertram 38 on its best day was no match for the 41 Apache.

True , but it is no better in rough water.

TGC-32 08-12-2008 10:50 AM

I don't think the Bertram 38 Comp would hang anywhere near the 41 Apache in really rough water. The extra length, taller hullsides and deeper deadrise on the Apache would make a world of difference, IMHO.

TGC-32 08-12-2008 10:51 AM

Plus, I can't think of any race that they (a 38 Bertram and a 41 Apache) actually competed against one another

DareDevil 08-12-2008 10:51 AM

you think in ruff water the 41 A was better then a bertram ?

TGC-32 08-12-2008 10:53 AM

I don't think it is even close, the Apache was far superior. Just my opinion, though.

DareDevil 08-12-2008 10:53 AM

I never heard of a bertram stuff or flip but there where alot of 41's that had the nose missing.

IN race conditions of today ,i have to say FOUNTAIN.
I know alot of people dont wanna here that but its tru.

smokeybandit 08-12-2008 10:58 AM

The best in rough water would be any boat throttled by Bob Saccenti.

ha ha ha hey the old baja 36 came from a cig mold that was sold to baja. I have been in a 38s resin bucket slow boat the cougar 38/ outerlimits 37/ 39 out ride them by a long shot:p, I'd take an old 89 cougar over a 89 resin bucket cig.:p [ ps loved it in the 90s when I was on cape cod and over a summer or two ran a few 38s with stock and one that was close to me at 600hp aside I would kill them in the chop and when we headed for open water running a lil rougher I would stay a 100 ft in front of them getting lots of air but in front back then it was great. NOW WITH THE NEWER BOATS AND STEPS its harder but theres always a faster boat around the cornor:p

Never saw a 41 lose its nose...or anything else for that matter.

The Apache that you saw stuff in our video was going at least 20 mph faster than any Bertram ever saw. Don't confuse dominance at 70 mph with dominance at 90.

PARADOX 08-12-2008 12:10 PM

THis is by far a great and in enjoyable reading with all the “opinions”. But.. to many “bests” from submarines to carriers, to race boats to cruisers etc.
Let’s clarify.
First.. Best “rough water” boat in the racing/performance/poker run market. Under 40’ over 40’
I can’t put up my 33 Avanti to a 47 Apache, but I will put her up against any 33’-35’
Size does matter.
Next.. .Best “non performance” (no race boats) .. again under 40 over 40.
Suthpan made some great rough water “performance” as well as cruiser type boats.
Then there is the definition of ”rough”. Let’s say that “rough” means generally… waves big enough to be a white knuckle situation, small enough to keep on plane, and hit 70.
Few floating devises will handle the Baring “rough” Straights.
IE, Fountains are pretty fast. Apaches were great legends of their times. But I suggest two situations.
A) Race.. from Dover to Calais.
B) Poker run from Chicago to Benton harbor. Now we are talking about Big waters.
I was in the Pier 33 run and I seen the “performance boats” bopping around like ping pong balls while a 55 Cary passed everyone and they were drinking champagne.
So speed.. rough waters, etc. are all relative.. Now.. let’s see some opinions.

I'd put any of the following up against a 41 Apache in any water:

43 Tencara
46 Skater
50 Jaguar

Viperfitness1 08-12-2008 12:48 PM

I THINK.... we should limit threads like this for people who own or have owned one of the boats they talk about. that way we dont have all these "computer powerboating cowboys" chiming in on something they have no idea about... can anyone guess which boat im rooting for?????

starts with and A.....

I'm not sure I agree......

I believe the 40 foot Skater will give the 41 Apache a run (I've seen one eat up a 47 Apache in a very rough race...but the 41 is a better boat). The famous footage off Point Pleasant was shot on a day when the 50 foot Popeye's Aluminum Cougar cat could not run in the conditions.

Certain boats simply excel in the rough for their size, the 41 Apache, the 40 foot Skater, the 30 foot Shadow, the Cougar Vees, and Buzzi's behemoths.

Probably guys like me? I was sure the 39 Scorpion would be better in the rough than the 43 BT, but was wrong. Check with Steve David about the rough water capacity of the 43 BT's if you don't believe me. How would the new 50+ Vee's, (Nortech, etc.) do against an Apache in the 7 to 8's crossing to Bimini etc? I would think just fine, but am not sure. Gino's MTI cat did fine this year.

AIR TIME 08-12-2008 01:22 PM

What about the 46 skater, they did very well in kw in 94/95 when I was there and the 46 I have been on lately seems to cut through anything or float across at high speeds, for in the 30s the AT 33 rides very nice in snooty water/rough water. upper 30s I like the ride of the ol 37, better than the 35 cafe racer and 38 tgs that I have been in. 30ft under 30ft spectra cat rode nice in wells off of block island and in the snotty bays.

BROWNIE 08-12-2008 01:36 PM

OK, goddammit, the 46' aluminum triple Cougar

Viperfitness1 08-12-2008 01:43 PM

jassman.. that was funny

everyone else... you guys are trying to compare way to many things here with way to many variables without experience...

most of these boats people are naming are all great boats in rough water....

my point is unless you have the balls to buy one and run it in rough water then you just dont know what you are talking about...

with that being said i don't know any of you and don't know your experience so im not singling anyone out, i would just like to hear how you come to the conclusion that one boat is better than the other.

I kinda partial to 38 Top Gun TS and Donzi 38 ZR.
The TG is the best riding boat I have owned and I have ridden the Donzi. The Donzi & TG seem to ride about the same.

You know it Viper! We are just learning this ourselves. Anyone have any idea what it's like to own a 31' boat and then jump up to a 41' Apache and run it in rough water? We were lucky to do 2800 RPM in rough water with our Stinger.

We're forced to do at least 70+MPH in rough water so we're not getting the crap beat out of us or the boat. That's instense when you're not use to driving/riding in rough water. I can't wait until the day Rob can stick the throttles forward and keep them there (throttling of course when needed---there's a whole other thread you can start and discuss because not everyone can throttle well), and look forward when the two of us have more fun with our ride instead of the intentisy we are experiencing today, and rightfully so.

Rob has a lot to learn in how to drive the our 41 in rough water, and he's not going to do that in one season. It depends on the waves and then there's dealing with Lake Erie. :angry-smiley-038: Ask Bobby Saccenti what he thinks of driving on Lake Erie. It ain't pretty! I can't wait to see what he does next season after having a full season under his belt. What he's learned just this season is amazing.

How well a boat does in rough water will depend on the driver. Skramer can kick a$$ in rough water in his 35 Cafe. LEOPAJM gave us a ride in his 41 Saber a month ago in 6+ footers. Talk about intense, but exhiliarting. I wasn't sure if I wanted to laugh or cry at times. He's awesome at driving and that Saber is unbelieveable in rough water! It was a ride I will never forget!

Again, both guys know how to drive a boat in rough water. If you don't it takes balls to get out in the rough stuff, put the throttles forward when your legs feel like jell-o and your hearts racing a million miles an hour. In the end and once you learn how to drive, it will be worth all the shaky legs and heart racing.
