I believe they delamed the second boat during the Bimini run and could not race Sunny Isles...so this would be the second delam on the second boat. Perhaps they are running it a bit too tight???

I can't believe this boat delaminated twice in it's first season.. |
I understand they do race once in a while in the big stuff. It just isnt the same as it was before. I liked racing in the big stuff. My opion for what its worth.

A couple of points on TV.....when APBA was on Speed....the F1's and F2S got the most tv time....it was because the racing was so close....even some of the big boys were complainning how there were not getting as much tv time as the small boats....
also...even yesterday in St Clair....in the last race...the people around us we not talking about Gieco...some folks even asked..so they just go around and dont race anyone else....they were excited with the Quatar, WHM and JD race....it was close...even though they are slower...thats what they were saying was cool.... No matter how fast a boat is....once it gose around 1 or 2 times by itself....they don't seen interested after that....thats just what I hear from watching a race.... I had people around asking me questions almost the whole race on the Stock class...because they were swapping positions...and within 4 to 6 seconds between them the whole race.... To a spector at a race....put the fastest boat on the course by themselves and let them do 15 laps and see the interest...and then put 10 to 15 small boats decK to deck for 6 to 7 laps and see which they like better.... And now produce a show with the 1 boat and then the 10 to 15 boats....see which one makes for a good show.... |

St Clair
The delam happened in the same spot that it was repaired. An attempt was made to patch the problem for the race but we decided that it wasn't going to be safe. The entire JBS racing crew is extremely bummed that we didn't get to slay some gecko ass for St Clair.

My opinion on how a boat race should be run has been posted many times but i will try this again
I think that the key to success is TV and an event atmosphere. It is more important than a roundy round race course When the races were run here in Grand Haven Michigan in the 80's the boats ran a course that was something like a 30 mile circle course. There were almost 400,000 spectators on water and land and the sea of spectator boats was phenomenal even though the race boats only passed by a few times during the race. The weekend was full of events and lots of people walking the dry pits and the wet pits and the action that we could see from a boat on the water was great since these guys were running true offshore conditions on a long course (No roundy round) The event was covered on TV and had lots of press. People come out for the activity and fun not just to see boats go roundy round When you watch racing of any type it is about the EVENT! It is about the characters , the location, the boats, the weather, the water ,ect... and oh by the way there was a race Look at the Kentucky Derby, it is a 3 minute race, but it is a weeklong event. Look at the Tour De France, people come out in droves to watch the bikes go by ONE TIME but it is all about the TV coverage and the party atmosphere. The Iditarod dogs run in nasty conditions and again watched by millions on TV and hundreds of thousands that go out to watch them blow buy ONCE Our poker run had thousands come out to watch the boats and they only came and went twice into the channel but there was plenty of hype, no TV but it had the ever present EVENT atmosphere and thousands came out to an event, that for the most part, was focused on the participants and the Make A Wish kids still people put it on their calendar just to come see the boats and the people and the EVENT not the actual running since we ran 140 mile course my opinion for success is this 1) A true OFFSHORE RACE - none of this roundy round crap 2) Good TV Coverage with good knowledgeable commentators and coverage of characters, events and locations 3) Just a few classes -To many classes just confuse the fans 4) Make it a 4 or 5 day event with music, car shows, poker run, boat shows ect.... 5) Stop thinking it is about the race. It IS About The EVENT 6) Unity in race organizations 7) Great location that can handle many components of an EVENT I have been involved in putting on races and poker runs in the past, and I have discussed putting on another race here (a true OFFSHORE RACE) Until we realize the racing itself is just a small component of the entire event we will not get where we need to go. Contrary to what is popular, I do not believe you need a spectator friendly course to have success. You need to have an event that makes people just want to be around the atmosphere in general. And Oh Yea there is a boat race a little Video of Grand Haven Races in the late 80's Picture of spectator boats |

My hats off to Jeff Stevenson and team JBS. This team has had more than their fair share of bad luck over the last couple of years. Hulls continuously delaminating and problems with their turbines. Undoubtedly the biggest damage has been done to Jeff's wallet. One thing that can be said about this team is that they have the desire to race and the desire to put on a good show for the fans. Here's to hoping they get these setbacks figured out and they get back on the race course, where they deserve to be. Thanks Jeff for all your efforts.

fast fun 2 - I thought it was 18? If it's 17 at least that closer, but you get my point you can ride a skiff at 14 years old, they need to allow younger riders in the slower classes - again just my opinon

Since the N2 (power turbine) governor is set to full open position it is definately "Mongo's Magic Throttle Arm" that keeps the engine from over speeding, especially since a turbine would tend to lag behind rapid throttle movements. (which just gives me that much more respect for those guys)
In layman's terms the engines are actually quite simple. They usually have two sets of turbine wheels. One called the "gas producer" which does nothing more than drive the compressor in the front of the engine and the "power turbine" which drives the prop. (these two sets of turbine wheels have no connection to each other whatsoever which is why they are called a "Free Turbine") The N2 governor controls the speed of the power turbine (prop speed) by changing the speed of the gas producer (compressor). As the prop becomes loaded and begins to slow down the N2 governor senses this, adds more fuel, and speeds up the gas producer (which increases the air flowing through the engine and increases the speed of the power turbine) The opposite is also true for when the prop becomes unloaded (less fuel= less air past the turbine wheels=slower prop) With the governor out of the picture the throttle man has total control of the N1 and N2 speeds (gas producer and power turbine) and must keep an eye on exhaust gas temp, torque, and turbine speeds (times two engines). I must admit I like the sound of big piston engines in boats more, but in the world of racing power to weight is key. The T53 used in the UH-1 produced about 1400 hp and 1700 ft/lbs of torque all for only 550 lbs (which equals abt 2.5 lbs/hp). So there's your quick layman's answer...........I think I'm going to pour myself a drink:drink:
