Very nice, BUT what if you pull it out of the water but forgot to put your drives up? (I have did that a few times:drink: )What if port engine fails when out on the water?

mikebrls 06-11-2011 04:47 PM

NICE , What is the estimated top speed ?
what company is building the boat ?
thank's

I don't understand this question? The drives are not going to drag on the road regardless of where they are trimmed.

HabanaJoe 06-11-2011 06:04 PM

I just love all this, so nice to see so many projects going on, wish i could be there again to do it all over!

Lots of luck with this project.....

Nice job guys, I like those motors and the long large skeg #8's.

I think he meant since its PTO driven then the motor would have to be started to trim. Not sure why it would matter with those drives though.

I bought the first of the LiquidTech SL 44 hulls(the fast one) and do the rest myself here in Sweden.
Rik has been involved from the beginning as he knows the hull well.
Everyone wants to do at least 100 mph with their diesels but you need Buzzi-like power for that :D
The Hustler reached 84 with 480,s so I hope for a bit more than that.

and are looking at 90+ with 500-550hp models.. keep the pics coming..

Got a decent OD on the gearing should go pretty good - the FPT turn a little higher rpm than the Cummins right?

Should give good prop speed and away you go - good luck again!

budd 06-12-2011 10:11 AM

very cool project. thanks for the pics

No more than 0,875 from ZF on these gearboxes.(300ATS)
Revs 3150=3600 rpm propspeed. About the same as a Merc 525 w 1,50 gearing.
Weight should be around 9500 lbs raceready w/o fuel.
The bare hull weighs 3900 lbs. The rest is dieselengines, 2-speed gearboxes, ASD-8L,s, another fueltank etc, etc.

New enginebeds. The diesels are heavy...

I'm not saying you listened to what I've been saying on here but what your doing is exactly what I keep preaching for years on here - it's all about the prop speed.

The boat will do well, my crystal ball allows me to see that in it's future :drink:

When we first had Ebel, she was 3,100 - 3,300 rpm with similar gearing and those were the small cui Seateks, barely 600hp, she could run 90-92mph all day long. Your newer engines and two speeds allow you to get every drop of Hp there is out of them not like the old mechanical engines - it will run good!

I have listened to your preaches here on OSO.:)
Visited Mr Buzzi at his factory in October.
"Aluminium hull!? Arneson drives!?" "Your an idiot!" "FPT-engines?-Ah, Good!" "Overdrive gearboxes?- Good,good..."
You get straight messages from that guy...

Other than that Mr Buzzi was very nice and showed us (my wife and me) around and talked racing for almost two hours.
He also explained very carefully WHY I was an idiot.

YOU have to remember that he build's and sell's his own boat's , so of course he will be a little one sided .
i think your boat is going to be a great set up once it's done .
great fuel burn with a nice top end speed and a long time before rebuild's :)

mike

HabanaJoe 06-12-2011 04:51 PM

100% correct if it's not FB it's no good!

You'll do fine with what you have, endurance is just that endurance!

I laugh when I read what people say about the Miami-Bimini as being a long race. In the old days the Sportsman races were almost that long, for a boat like your it takes a 100 or so miles to weed out the boys from the men! Good luck my friend!

Buzzi is known for talking down everything that is not Buzzi so I just laughed. He builds boats in glassfibre, straight axels and rudder. Everything else is no good. But he is a funny guy to talk to.

Joe. You know Buzzi!
My main goal is Cowes-MonteCarlo in 2013 and possibly Round Britain 2012. Did the RB 2008 (third overall) so a 100 miles race is not much to talk about.
The 8 legs were between 130 and 210 miles, 1400 miles overall. Plus the 1100miles that we made before the race started. Thats the distance from where I live to the start of RB 2008.
The plan was to drive the boat back home also by sea but I hired a truck...

stirling 06-13-2011 03:45 AM

The boat look great ,and nice engine package too.
Was wondering about the Arnesons ASD8L ,s ,are those different material than a ASD8 ?
What sort spline do they have 26 or 25 ?
Any idea about what diameter props to start with ?

Same material but 8"(200 mm) longer and bigger skeg.
You can order them with 25 or 26 spline. I have the 26 to fit Merc propellers.
Bought three sets of used propellers here on OSO.
Mercury Racing 29x16.75, 15 rake and 32x18, 15 rake, both 5-blade.
Also one set of Throttle Up 5-blade 34-16,5. I think they are to big but it was a good deal.
Will try the 29,s first and see what happens.

Just a shake down run. 50 mph in first gear to check everything. Ok so far. Bad weather here so I`ll have to wait a couple of days to next run.

First real test today.
5-blades, 29"-16,75/15 rake. Outward rotation. On plane in 5-6 sec.
90 mph at 3100 rpm. Will change the direction and do another test before putting on the 32" props.
Could have needed some tab but they act like light switches at high speeds... To much oilflow. Will fix that next week..
Trim on the drives work fine.
Everything OK so far :boat:

HabanaJoe 07-23-2011 03:10 PM

I knew you would get her to start running good, just got to listen to the people who have done it before!

I'm very happy for you guys, now go get some real speed from her, you should break 100 just keep playing!

Rik 07-23-2011 05:11 PM

Congrats!! It is on it's way to the original speed goal!! :D

One thing my dad engrained in me after designing his custom 70' sport fish with arnesons is...propellers propellers propellers. Surface drives are so finicky. Good luck with the project.

Been testing different propellers, fuelloads, ballast etc.
Best setup so far is 29"-16,75 propellers turning in. Top 90 mph at 3100rpm.
Tried the 32"-18 dia but as expected they were to big. Speedwise ok at 88 mph but only 2700 rpm. 77 in first gear.
Will look for some more testpropellers here on OSO before ordering raceprops.

The weather is getting worse here in the northern part of Sweden so there is only a couple of more weeks to test.
Today the sun is shining but the wind is about 30-35 mph with 6-8 ft waves. Short, steep waves where you have to balance the boat carefully.
The trimtank is only about 50 gallons but I will need at least 130- 150 gallons in the bow to get the balance right in headseas. The diesels are heavy...
