They broke the record fair and square. I'm still waiting for the official start and stop time. Outerlimits is the new record holder for the entire race cat or vee!

I think you're wrong Dan. I'd suggest waiting for the offical results. They ran about 50-55 across most of the south shore. I dont see how they could have averaged 90 either. At best I would guess they might have broken the vee hull record.

congrats to JOE &JOE racing:coolcowboy: for the new record. there lucky I wasn't ready to run this year:party-smiley-004:;););). glad it was nice out and not as rough as last year.I hope more people will run next year and sign up early for the discount price, I will. I plan on the bimini/ miami race just need to talk Gerry into it. congrats to all the teams for running.

Congrats to all involved in the event

Taking a long time to post hope nobody is trying to cheat. Would not be good for the sport. I heard 90seconds they beat the record by?:party-smiley-004:

|
Congrats Joe!!
xxoo |
Confused:rolleyes: I watched it on computer also nice win!
|
Congradulations Joe!

I talked to Joe Sgro and he said they were running around 100mph across the sound and around 80 in the ocean. He had it running 110 through Manhattan with no gas stops. They had a fuel bladder added to make it without a stop.
|
and to think this race was almost postponed to next year......can't wait to see who shows next year to try and take that record back......congrats to the new record holders and to Billy and Charlie for what looks to be a succesfull race.....
|
hopefully im eating my words and he did set the new record!!!! i just did a replay and must admit it now looks close. although in the replay it shows him running in the 70's along the south shore.
i must admit, the real time feed is not accurate at all as it showed him running 50's-60's the whole way in the ocean. running the replay it looked like it started about 9:35am and ended 12:45ish. hard to tell the exact start and stop. another factor is the advertised distance. if truly 271 miles that would require an average of roughly 91 mph. watching it real time didnt give me the sensatioon that he was even close to that pace. In any event...CONGRATULATIONS JOE, OL, and ILMOR. New record holders for both vee bottom and catamaran 2011!!!!! |

From what I saw on Kattack tracking showed them at the beginning running about 85 across the sound, after rounding Montauk they came off plain and looked like they were waiting for the 42 outerlimits. Once the 42 caught up they went off together then the 43 was maintaining about 65 in the ocean. Through Manhattan they were about 80 with a few times hitting 85. Once out of Manhattan not sure about speeds because tracking kept crashing. They would had to finish just after 12pm to win, but they crossed the finish at around 12:45pm. Congrats to all that participated and the 43 Outerlimits crew on winning

Second....I was on the start boat and the green flag was thrown at 9:40AM Delay was due to some boats still topping off their tanks past the official start time. Third....I was on the boat at the finish line and saw the checker being thrown. Time was compared to the official start time that was noted at the start of the race and YES...they officially broke the existing record for any boat cat or vee Around Long Island. Congrats to the Outerlimits crew Joe and Joe and to the Fountain crew, who broke the outboard record that stood before today. Thanks to all for the support both on the site here and those who actually showed up and raced. |
To clear a few things up
1. For anyone who has ever used Kattack its not very accurate 2. The speeds were indicated in knots not mph as stated before 3. I was on the phone with Charlie McCarthy throughout the day with updates and got a message right as they crossed the line and broke the record. 4. You cant cheat agaist a clock 5. Why would you ever go by post times on OSO for anything 6. Charlie and Billy had a clock on them the whole race and they beat the record by 90 seconds 7. The only other boat that finished was the Fountain CC 8. What JC posted was correct as I talked to both Joes right after the race. 9. The Outerlimits SV43 IS the new record holder for the round Long Island race. Again congrats to the Joe and Joe for running an awesome race. 10. Billy will have the official times and a write up coming out very soon. 11. Justin, when is Pat coming to pick his new car up cause you loose!:evilb: |

You should lighten up a little. This is boating and it''s suppose to be fun. I had a good time just watching it on the internet and thought it was amazing to be able to track what they where doing.
All you guys that showed up, congratulations! There's no better reward than knowing you showed up, tried and had a good time doing it. Nice to see an actual 'race' with all different size and types of boats not going around in a circle!

Here is the actual e-mail from the past holder of the record, Stu Hayim.
Guy, please print and hand this to Joe and Joe should I not be able to personally congratulate you, I will use e-mail On a warm August Sunday,(I believe 8-6-89) 22 years ago and after 3 of my own failed attempts, another "Joe" (Imprescia) and Alex and I succeeded on breaking Fred Kiekhaefer's 1968 record around L I. I never imagined we would be fortunate enough to lose the record to 2 GREAT guys, so on behalf of all 3 of us, CONGRATULATIONS on a huge victory and a job WELL done! You are now the proud owner of my friend Don Aronow's record Stuart Hayim 9-25-11 PS, Stu drove like a crazy man and was able to meet the winning boat and congratulate these racers who broke his record. Real racers showing respect to other real racers. The last two years, the attrition rate has stayed the same 2/3rds of the fleet fails to finish. This is and always has been a tough race. |
Got some pictures and footage from the event...will try to post when I can somehow get them re-sized...
