My dad bought a 16' Checkmate back in 68 and strapped a Merc 95hp shortshaft to it. Now in 1982 or so, the boat radared at 72mph with his 300 pound butt driving. He's pretty sure it was a 75+ machine when it was fresh. At full speed it was smooth, no chine walk and a nice rooster tail. (he had SS props back then, no Alum in this household) Now 75 is still a fast boat today, but back in 68??? Dude, that's just sick!!! I sure would like to find that old hull and restore it for my dad, he's 71 now. Me and my brother had to be the luckiest kids back then driving that thing around when we were 12, unsupervised!!! Never an accident by the way, the old man loved the fact that I could pop that thing right up on the trailer. By the way, the pic is fine, the boat was a left hand drive, that nearly killed my dad, but that's another story, mom's still pissed after nearly 40 years.

I purchased my first boat in 1978 , she was a 1966 16' Mohawk rated for 40hp and had a big old 1965 60hp Johnson hanging from her transom .
We ran her in the Hudson river and I still have fond memories showing off jumping the day liner wakes !
