How do you guys keep your screens from getting hot and blacking out in the summer?

Bawana 11-12-2015 12:08 PM

ah yes very good question, I have noticed that if my Ipad gets hot it doesn't like it at all. I always put mine in the cabin in the past, but now just purchased a mounting system. I am thinking when I am docked somewhere I will have to put a beach towel over it on sunny days. I will also try to mount it under my race faring when I run, and try to keep it out of the sun.

I was recently given an iPad mini with cell service and GPS. I know my home lake very well so I don't need it often, but would like to use this as a chartplotter when I do poker runs or visit other areas. What app seems to be best? Looks like Navionics and Garmin Bluechart are the two front runners. I know they can be tough to see in direct sunlight, but this seems like a pretty economical option for the amount of time I am going to use it.

Has anyone tried one of these cases with the anti glare? Does it help?

I have that case, I love it. You can, and I have, have it drop from about 7 feet and didn't break. The anti glare is ok but if its in the sun it still gets hot & will shut down. But as for saving your Ipad from drops, it works very well.

Bawana,

Before it gets hot and shuts down can you see the charts good enough to use on the boat? The heat will be a issue here no matter what but I may be able to use it for a couple of months before it gets real hot.

I'll break down and have to buy a real chart plotter then.

If the sun is directly on the screen you still can't see. But its still better then my chart plotter.

Good enough for me, just ordered one from Amazon.

Thanks.

I used my iPhone the last two seasons with the Garmin app.... I have to admit I like it better then my Garmim 640 gps unit.... worked better in sun light and at night..... app has all I need. I tried using my iPad but it was a WiFi only version so had no gps capability. I just bought the new iPad Pro with cellular capability..... looking for the best mount now so I can use that when I go to new places.... just need to find the right place to mount it..... I honestly think, for the boating I do, the iPad/iPhone work the best for me....... My 640 will be my back up gps..... in spring I'll also be adding usb ports to a few areas of my boat...... everything seems to need charging these days.......

I am going to order this one.
