I'll take a combo of well built fiberglass, with a modern bottom, thank you very much! With twin 750hp Potter motors, I get 110+ mph and as far as rough water performance....
The last picture was taken from my boat looking back. That's a 40' Skater. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPB2...c8i2vgFjAA5Eo_ |

Thanks for putting pictures of her up Ed, I don't have dry 6's for her, I have been buying land instead of boat part the last few years. She's an amazing boat, they all are, center steering #6 race set ups are m favorite.

Morning Jay, she's not been wet in a while, 2 toddlers now is very busy, you know the program. She may get put back together this winter, it's time. Hope all is well. In most of the race videos she's running Mercury 1000's. War hawk runs over 100, that unit only read happened to read up to 99.9, it' s flawless.

what engines are in it in the videos? thx rm
Key West '91 and Coco Beach '92 are Merc 1000's (540 ci). They ran 6,400 RPM. The "scream" you hear came from Y-pipes, which went away when I changed to CMI Big-Tubes. Best sound was Mercs and Y-pipes, but only ran that combination a couple of times. Of course, that was more than 20 years ago, so I may have some of this mixed up. Believe it or not, all of those motors were quite reliable: only blew one in a race ( the first one with Mercs in Key West), and that was back when races were 155 miles long, not like today's little sprints. |
Great thread on some legendary machines.

Great boats, Carls is the sister ship to mine they where built side by side at the factory back in the day, only one I know of still keep by her original owner.
That is amazing but if you think about these types of boats, most people like change and even if it is the same brand they like to get new ones. Add in the "interesting nature of employment" of company founder and I'm sure some of the original boat owners it wasn't going to be a "long term ownership model." |

That was KW about 6 yrs ago or so. Carls (Cig) boat has 5's on it and it was sold and redone 2 yrs ago by a OSO member that lives in the Fort Myers area. I too have the twin boat to that but weights about 3k ponds less. From all 5 stag guns that one weight the most which was built to race in Argentina but never did.
Here's a quick old school rough water story....In 1988 I took a ride up the Hudson to West Point in my Firefox with some friends. Another buddy had his 28SS, also loaded with people. Nice scenic ride. On the way back when we got around Manhattan a headwind started howling and it was hell getting back to NJ. The Firefox and the 28SS were off plane working these 8 to 10 ft seas (near the VZ) making a slow, safe passage in the big water. Just under the VZ we were in the trough when a 41 Apache blasts over the wave caps above (25 yards away), followed by a couple of 38 Cigarettes! That was severely ballsy, especially the Cig guys, leaping atop those waves like that. The full length of those powerboats was airborne, plus, plus! Impressive. The wave height got smaller by degrees as we got closer to Jersey, when it got under 4 we pressed the throttles forward and got to horse shoe cove. The Apache and 38's were there partying and swimming for a long, long, time already. And that was that. |

I think the 41 Apache is by far the most iconic offshore V bottom boat ever . If I had the dough I would own one . It has nothing to do with technology I personally think that old school look can't be beat. The one boat that comes close is a Cigarette Flat deck . But then again who said I had to be objective . The one pictured is mine.

That's a 40' Skater. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPB2...c8i2vgFjAA5Eo_ Sorry for:hijack: Some of the Apache's with the newer hardware are badazz resto-mods, love them. Not hating on anyone or anything, but seriously, no one runs their new 41+ new tech rides in rough water?:bsflag: It is more likely that they aren't on the forums etc. We all know people with bad toys that don't even lurk, they just buy badazz stuff and enjoy it. I would also add that if the water really is Apache rough, as I like to call it, is there really anything to prove by pounding on the gear besides proving everything mechanical can be broken? People can be broken too or even worse. No sense in running in stupid rough water to prove one is really stupid. Should you need help you put others at risk to rescue, tow etc just not necessary. Sorry to sound like a nanny, but unless there is a trophy, sanctioning body etc what is being proved to anyone? Who cares. None of believe each others rough water stories anyway. I say 50 in 6's and all of us say BS, not even on plane in 3's you wimp in our heads:lolhit: It is funny though how many use the Apache as the standard for rough water performance! A true legend like Fountain and speed:poopoo: |
