World champions?

Ok , look I'm not trying to piss anyone off here. But I was just looking at some cig pics and noticed a theme. They all have the " world champ" being it from stock or not. My question is when was the last time they were? I was district 6 motocross champ, got invited to Vegas to race for $100k . But I was broken. Femurs take time to heal. But at the end of the day the only reason I bring up my short glorious past is because it is the past and I leave it there because there are and always be someone better than me. The cig logo is like al bundy's 3 touchdown passes in high school. At the end of the day I own a fountain and it's a cookie cutter boat I know but we don't claim shi t.

Wait let's get back to this district 6 champ thing??? What yr was this at and what class????

SB 11-03-2015 09:11 PM

Cat Killer ?

Worlds Fastest V ?

Only boat manufacturer to have branded their own skanks ?

I think Fountain has made it's mark at times too.

caseyh 11-03-2015 09:26 PM

That's like asking why do that all have a oval with their logo in it? Who did that first?

rak rua 11-03-2015 09:28 PM

It's just a logo, nothing else.

Once any brand establishes itself with a logo, they never change it. Same with Fountain, the company was thrown into turmoil a few years ago and the founder has gone but they still use the same logo. Just happens that Cig put the number 1 in the center at a time when it was appropriate.

Look at car manufacturers, they retain their same logo, just like sports suppliers, clothing designers etc.

I pay no attention to the logo accept that it identifies a excellent boat. I know the fine print is not up to date and anyone with the funds and knowledge to be in the purchasers seat will hopefully recognize the detail as somewhat out of date.

Back to the op's question, can someone tell us the actual year Cigarette won their last world championship? Not bashing, I love 'em and that's why I'm interested to know the answer. (But too lazy to go searching lol)

I was #1 champ in flag football when I was 8 now I can put champ on the side of my boat right...

Bawana 11-03-2015 09:31 PM

Anytime anyone, any team or any company, self proclaims them self the "Champs" , " Worlds Greatest", "Best"...is a joke. If you are such, everyone knows it, you should not have to toot your own horn. Its one thing to fly the flag, so to speak, if you are the existing. But to live in the past is very very sad.

Full Force 11-03-2015 09:37 PM

Here we go lol logo is just that.... A logo....

As far as winning races the cigs of Don era were the winners... After Don they were not focused on racing lije earlier years....if Don wasn't killed I bet things would have been different... But history is what it is.

SB 11-03-2015 09:49 PM

Exactly.

I ran into Busch Sr bunch of years ago (after he was pres) up in Montreal (guys week-end) and he came walking down the stairs ( from the Hotel we where staying at) while we where all hanging on the railing face down hung over. He picks up our heads by saying 'heh fellas' in his unmistakeable voice. We all groaned out "Heh George." He laughed. Might have been laughing at us, but he laughed.

Would you still call him President Busch when face to face ?

LOL.

Yep,,he would most likely have sold the Cigarette boat company, and started a new brand across the street to compete with Cigarette,

You do realize that Don didn't even own Cigarette by the time he died right? He had sold it years before so his death and the racing heritage of Cigarette would have no connection unless he was going to reacquire the brand and start racing again but he was a month short of being 60 years old so I don't think racing was on his mind.

Which is exactly what he did.......

From Cigarette's current webpage:

By early 1982, the Cigarette logo had become a registered trademark; Aronow bought our Halter Marine's remaining shares and then in a surprise move, sold the company to Jerry Jacoby. The sales agreement had a strict non-compete clause that Aronow could not build any V-bottom boat until 1987.

In 1984 Jeffrey Friedman bought the company and in 1985, the new 24' Cigarette "Firefox" was introduced at the Miami Boat Show--a single-engine, sit down speedster.

klaatutooyou 11-04-2015 05:29 AM

Yes, more details needed. Used to invade some of the bigger D6 events way back in late 80's. Some great battles with some real characters but it pales in comparison to today's athletes.

Seems like a bunch of busted up limping old moto guys turn to performance boats for the adrenaline fix.

Good thread idea for winter, this one may have legs.

I dont know the answer to your question but I would guess before 1978, because Reggie started Fountain in 1979,,lol

Who had the last "factory sponsored" team and when?

Rak Rua I was waiting for you to bring that over here.

MMMMMM Stir the Pot

I believe the last year Cigarette was claiming World Champions was 71 or 73

gsxrmike 11-04-2015 09:04 AM

What is ironic is most of the wins Cigarette take credit for were actually made by Formula Powerboats (Owned by Aronow). The term "The Cigarette" was actually the name of the boat not the boat manufacturer. The BRAND "Cigarette" didn't come till way later, after Donzi was created and sold off if I remember correctly. Cigarette (The Brand) seems to take credit for all the wins achieved under all the brands under Aronow's stewardship. This particular fact seems to not register with most fanboys, having said that I honestly feel Cigarette deserves the reputation they own, as far as being a well built, fast, great handling boat. However the legacy has a lot of asterisks in it, if you ask me.

Flightplan 11-04-2015 09:58 AM

Everybody go ahead and have your fun. Wont be long till them Pache boys show up and set things straight...

Don't bogart the salsa, and no double dipping please...

bck 11-04-2015 11:00 AM

I figured out a long time ago that when non boaters or even boaters who just aren't into the fast stuff ask what kind of boat I have it's easiest just to say " a cigarette boat". On the occasions I try to actually tell them what I have, I just get blank stares until they finally tell me that I have "a cigarette boat" despite the fact that I actually have a Formula (or fill in any other name here). I've come to accept that the brand name Cigarette has come to define an entire catagory of boat. Hell, the actors in Miami Vice even referred the the Scarab as a Cigarette in the show. The logo could say anything and it wouldn't change anything. I'd guess that in 1982 when the logo was trademarked they were definitely the winningest brand in offshore by far. Get over it.

Cash Bar 11-04-2015 11:04 AM

I'm digging through the OSO archives today when I have a few spare minutes. I think Cigarette "may" have won in F2 in the 2000-2003 years but not sure. I think the Virgin Gladiator or the LipShip TS Gun may have gotten a title.

I think you overlooked their rebranding and "lifestyle" marketing. The championship logo is still available but it seems there is a much broader approach in their marketing.

bck 11-04-2015 11:53 AM

I was searching for how many championships they'd won and one of the search results was for for a Popular Mechanics article about the company. I got a laugh out of some of the other articles from that time. Front wheel drive has arrived. Several pages of CB technology, including the chance that they'd get small enough to wear on a wrist. Variable displacement engines where they had levers in the engine to alter stroke length.

Man if I had a dollar for everytime someone looks at the logo at a gas station and asks "where do you race that thing"?
I try to tell em that it`s a family pleasure boat but with the cleavers noone seems to believe me. I~m going to start making stuff up, especially to " who makes that Cigarette boat?"
Or " are you the number one race team?"
Yes, yes I am
