Hurricane Irma vs. Florida

wobble, none taken, we did prep like we always do, this is just what you have to do if you want to live in Florida on the water. My buddy 90 Viper there in the Houston area tells me things are getting better incredible response from the volunteers so both communities are on the mend

Keys videos/photos:
Before and after Hurricane Irma: What happened to our favorite Florida Keys landmarks? - Sun Sentinel
1st video is a guy that chartered a helicopter to go look at his house (bypassing the roadblocks set up by the cops). Note the guy was talking about his 75 ft dock (IT WAS CONCRETE) that got washed away.
Scroll down to the split screen photos and you can slide the marker from left to right to see before/after photos of local landmarks.

If I was a keys homeowner I would bulldoze the lot, rebuild on stilts. If money was an issue I would bulldoze and install a for sale sign! That is going to be a nightmare for homeowners to settle with insurance, hire contractors that are insanely overwhelmed and permitting is going to be a joke. In most cases you will need to update the whole house to current standards in order to get a permit signed off on. Insurance will only pay for the damage, not the upgrades!
Some things were allowed (grandfathered in) but now that it is gone.......it won't be allowed again!

Faired well. Dad and x and dogs survived in the condo. Got power back on Friday. No damage to my house dads house and unbelievably my dads 35 year old strip mall that has a 100 feet of 6 by 6 panes of glass. And faces east where just 2 blocks down the road at Naples airport they recorded a gust of 142 mph.
We are extremely lucky the way that storm came on land through Goodland , Marco island
If the eye was 15 miles offshore when it came in it would have looked like Barbuda

Finally have a hotspot to log back on. Still no phone/tv/internet at the house.
We had several evac destinations reserved but after all the storm movement nowhere looked as safe as staying home. We rode it out just west of Ft Lauderdale. Put all 7 dogs in crates in the living room and buckled down. Hotwired two live-well pumps to a car battery and kept the 155g saltwater aquarium alive until the storm passed and we could run the generator. Did the same with our well to run water powered by the generator. Got power back on the 3rd day.
After all was over the house and shop/apt came through with only exterior damage done from debris. Looks like the east and south sides got lit up by small cal weapons. Lost a lot of trees(we had 43) and several were LARGE. Two took out the barn.
After working like animals for the last few days the property looks great other than the two trees and the barn. Getting tree pros to handle that in a few weeks.
I'd say we dodged a bullet on the SE coast for sure. As bad as it is it could be so much worse. Not the same for the Keys.
I have reached out to the women's charity we partner with for the OSO/SOTW Key West party in November. They are getting me a list of needed items and I will get together a trailer full and deliver. After that the party in November will really need to raise some good money this year. It will be much needed.

I just want to give it up to all of the out of state utility workers that poured in here and helped put our grid back together. These guys were all over it, working from before first light to well after dark. Florida thanks all of them and the families they are away from. It's a huge mess down here and we needed the help.

J/K bro. Glad all is well. Maybe the 2017 OSO/SOTW party can raise some relief money!

Got to our home on Cudjoe Key today. We were spared for sure, only minimal house damage and only storage area got wet. Lost 6 palm trees and possibly boat lift motors. The drive down things were very bad. Gonna take some time before this place is what we all love here.
