Hoping for the best - Charlie destroyed Punta Gorda in 2004 - this could be as bad/worse.

Officials in Monroe County — home of the Florida Keys, a popular tourist destination — said Tuesday they had issued a mandatory evacuation for tourists beginning on Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. A mandatory evacuation for residents was also issued for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

The county has about 80,000 residents and regularly draws throngs of visitors who travel to the Keys, a series of islands off of South Florida and connected to the rest of the state by U.S. 1.

So my mom is down there well inland SW of Orlando between Winter Haven and Lakeland. Trying to get her to fly out tomorrow but having lived there for 20 years she seems to think the canes are dissipated by the time they make it that far inland. Is that usually the case?

Let her know that this is the biggest one ever in the Atlantic She has nothing to compare it to-. Get her out of here-I am rolling out Thursday and heading North West.

All you have to do is get her on the phone with somebody that lived through Andrew.... My wife lived in Homestead & went to college 6 days before Andrew. Finally spoke to her mom on the phone 3 days after the storm. She tried to drive home, (after mom told her NO) and couldnt find the exit off the highway or her own home since the landscape was so destroyed. Other than the fact that her dad insists they took truck loads of migrant workers bodies out in semi trucks after the storm... And, a strange form of something similar to martial law to prevent looting.

CAT 5 is no joke... Its just not worth dying over.

And lets face it, even if the storm isnt bad, you dont have air conditioning or food. It sucks.

No waiting period on a new loan since fema knows you are in for the long run. 30 day waiting period is to prevent people from buying insurance just before a possible flood event as in a hurricane offshore.

Weather channel was showing keys evacuation video this morning.....showed a new style F150 towing a purple/white Sunsation, not sure if it was current footage or a stock clip of a previous evacuation.
