Re: Diesel powered sport boats?

Hi Kurt.

The motors make around 490ft/lbs @2500rpm.

325 hp @3600rpm

I bought my motors as 'long blocks' from Peninsular and did all the marinizing myself, so the setup is slightly different the genuine Peninsular item, but they are fundementaly the same.

Mine is propped to over-rev slightly when 'flat out', as this reduces the turbo lag issues when getting on plane.

So it tops out at about 3950-4000rpm.

Bravo 1 drives @ 1.36:1 and slightly worked 30" Bravo1 four bladers (ballanced and re-pitched to 30-1/2")

Peninsular are at www.peninsulardiesel.com

Lightspeed, hi.

It's British built Phantom, Steve Baker founded Phantom boats in 1969 in the SE of England and built many championship wining boats (up to 31 foot) untill 2000 when he retired.

His smaller single and twin OB boats dominated UIM class III here for many years, and a current single OB class here ('OCR' Ofshore Circuit Racing) is still dominated by his 18' and 19' foot models, with the V6 2 litre discipline national championship being won on 11 consecutive years by Steves products .

Here's a pic from the 70's of a Phantom 26, UIM class III 4 litre

And here's an old pic from the mid 80's of a Phantom 25, UIM class III 4 litre

Mine was the last 28 he built, and I'm extremely proud to own it, and to be able to call Steve a friend. He was a major part of British powerboating, which is now very sadly in decline.

pics of it's build can be seen

here

and here

He built the bare hull and structures for me, which I then fitted out and rigged/built the motors.

there has been some more talk about this boat, and a rather controvercial video of it

here

Thanks for the interest

Jon Fuller

PS. forgot to add, there is another phantom 28 here, the one before mine from the mould (there are only 15 genuine ones) which has blown small blocks, and runs 93mph.

When they really shine tho', is when it gets rough! :drink:

Thanks, I suppose it does a bit.

To be honest, the ballance of my boat isn't ideal. The choice to go diesel was purely finacial, when I built this boat, diesel was around £1 per Imperial gallon ($1.60) and gasoline was £5 (about $8) per Imperial gallon.

Being diesel, it's more fuel efficient too, at WOT they burn 15 Imp gallons/hour each (an imperial gallon is 4.54 litres, a US gallon is 3.9 litres)

So if you do the math, and compare it to a similar powered small block, you'll see the cost of running a gas boat here is shocking.

with regular gas small blocks, or OBs, itis an awsome rough water boat.

here's a small block powered one.
