cummins engine

That cummins engine in marine form, is from a joint venture with mercruiser and cummins.
they used the 5,9 litre 6 inline 24 valve diesel engine ,that is been using in Dodge pickups since 2003 ,and known as the 3 th generation engines.

I have one in my Dodge pick up ,and that one is heavily modified ,and now waiting for a set twin stage turbo,s from BD ,horsepower should be in the 550 + hp range and 1350 ft/lbs torque.

Now with my single turbo I have 38 psi boost pressure ,and with the twins I could see 48 psi boost with the stock headbolts ,and 75 psi boost with the arp studs(depending on wastegate setting)

This is my daily driver ,and can tell this engine is unbelieveble strong.

That Cummins engine is a serious threat to the Yanmar 480 engines. Lighter weight, more torque and close to the same hp.

Fountain is using the Cummins now. Why...?

They are trying to invade the European market?
At least here in Scandinavia Fountains are getting a good market share.
Why doesn´t Cigarette wake up ?
No Scandinavian/North European dealer perhaps, hmmmm that would be interesting?
Last I contacted Cigarette regarding Diesels was a few years back and they thought about Yanmars in TopGun and Tiger but apparently they havent made any ?

Why not just get a bigger single turbo ?
Afraid of Lag?

The 480 Yanmar is around 1400 lbs with a transmission so the Cummins may actually be heavier, looks like a nice package though. I like that at 2400rpm you get 425hp, 930 ftlbs and only 9.3gph! A pair of these would let me cruise at 100mph while getting 5mpg!

Fountain is partially owned by Mercury and Cummins is Mercury's diesel partner.

Yeah ,I don,t like the lag,its less fun to drive.
I,m going to install the kit within a few weeks, and post a pic when its finished.

You where in trucks also right ?

I,m from Holland Europe, known as sterling from the UK forum.

I,ve got a Isotta Fraschini 450 hp V6 Bi turbo diesel for sale ,if you have anybody thats intrested ?
I,m not that far from you.

Impossible. The very best diesel efficiency is 21 HP per gallon per hour. That means about 20 gph at 425 hp would be the lowest gph you may see. 18 hp per gallon per hour is far more typical. at cruise, and 14-16 flat out,

So if you could actually go 100 MPH with only 850 HP (very, very unlikely) then your fuel burn will be about 60 gph, or about 1.5 mpg. But you won't be that fast, and you won't be that efficient at top HP.

For comparison: a gasoline engine at peak fuel efficiency (at the torque peak) might just possibly hit 12 hp per gallon per hour, but 10 is far, far more likely. At peak HP, gas engine efficiency is down to about 8 hp per gph on a low power engine, and as low as 6 hp per gallon per hour on a high HP blown engine (they lose a LOT of efficiency at high RPM).

Gas or diesel, your best hp per gph is at torque peak (that's why its peak torque -- the engine is most efficient).

A big advantage of diesel over gas is that the torque peak is flat and close to peak HP, so you back off to 80% or 75% and you are fuel efficient. Gas engines usually have the peak torque at about 3000 to 3500, so you are at 50% to 60% speed for efficient cruise.

Actually it's 1,411 lbs without gear for the Yanmar 480.

There is an article in this months diesel power magazing with marine engines in it... I just saw it at HEB... cummins/merc is mentioned, but that seems like some serious torque for a bravo!

I'll just build mine with surface drives
