can a 496 be run on land without a garden hose on it?

Coolant is in the engine regardless of having a hose attached. It will run for a few seconds with the pump ciculating the coolant through the engine. It would take longer than that to create enough heat to heat the coolant. Yes, I agree, its easier to just hook up a hose.

If you take the belt off so the water pump does not spin dry and only run the engine at idle on a cold engine the heat sink of the cold iron, cold 10 quarts of oil and the static cold coolant in the block should handle running the engine for 5-10 seconds or so...at idle. Very low hp/heat generated at idle. Always best to run with sea water pumping however.
