Do you guys drain the pink stuff when you are done to eliminate the potential for freezing. I think this provides a little extra protection.

Sacandaga,

I think you are on to something! You said it could drive you to drink, right? Well, get obnoxiously drunk (maybe with a few friends) and just have everyone piss in the hoses of the motor (that you disconected prior to drinking). With all that alcohol in there that block will never freeze! Then come spring there is no (extremely) harmful products going into the lake. It is a win, win situation - have a party, protect your motor and save the environment! I'll talk to you later.

That's it, Evil Twin for President.

Yeah Evil, after I talked to you last night I rebuilt the raw water pump. The original impeller was fine, but figured I'd put the new one in anyhow. The gear oil in the pump did have gas in it, good thing I changed that oil. Weird design how that works. I guess the manufacture had no choice as GM changed the 502 block leaving no where to mount the gear driven fuel pump. Oh well, this works, just have to change that oil probably once a year.

I like your idea about the booze, we'll have to try that one over and over until we get it right!

Talk to you soon,
Joe

Why not just pull the hose from the engine to the outdrive and let the engine water pump suck up the antifreeze? That is what I do and it takes about a minute to empty a 5 gallon bucket.

Default Von is correct

Von,

You are absolutely correct. You can always disconnect the hose going to the water pump.

If you have a sea strainer, just pop it open, and run the A/F thru the strainer. I do this on my boat all the time, its easyest for me.

Well, after all that, I spent the day yesterday and winterized it the old fashion way. It really was easy. On this boat (25' Outlaw) everything is really easy to reach. The drain plugs were simple and hoses came off fairly easy. It really felt good to know all the water is out before I added a/f.

Thanks to everyone for all the input.

Things I have learned about winterzing -

The maximum expansion for freezing water is right at 32 degrees, when the water first freezes. After that the ice contracts as it gets colder. This can happen during 1 cold snap. As soon as the water in the block reaches freezing - pow.

The numbers referred to on the "non toxoc" marine antifreezes (propylene glycol -50, -100 etc) are the freeze solid point. They will start to form a slush well above that. As they are not being used for coolant and do not have to circulate when cold, the manufactures rate the stuff differantly than if you were using it in a radiator.

Default Thanks Marc

Hey Marc,

Thanks for the Trans. I put it in the boat a few weeks ago. So far about 10hrs. on it and no problems. I plan on sending you the old trans to have it built so I can replace the other trans this winter.

thanks for sending me the trans on such short notice. I picked it up a the airport with no problem. You saved me and my girlfriend a lot of change in plans and reservations!!!
