You don’t have to worry about blowing props out as much.

Well I can also procharge my 496Ho. the Cast pistons just worry me a tad. even though procharger makes a bolt on kit. I wonder how reliable it is. I also own a procharger kit(M3sc) for a 502 MPI that i bought last year hoping to get my hands on a 502. Around here its tough and couldnt find a 502. Thats how i ran into this 597Cu.in. The only thing that concerns me on that 597 is the Accel DFI system. I dont have any programming cables for it or software or license Key to run the software. Everything is discontinued. If the engine needs tuning it would be a pain.

It would just suck passing up on that deal but the more i read forums. if i keep the boat around 650-750Hp. it seems it would be more reliable.

Ill see if i can find a picture of my hull inside. It is well built with side support and stringers from what i can remember, the motor sits inside and once its in, you would have a hard time changing a starter if you had to on my 496.

Yeah But it will be tight just like the 496. Ill have a harder time making the procharger system fit with that intercooler box remote mounted and the charger hanging off the side of the motor

Guimond,

I have a PowerQuest 280 with a 496HO and that bolt-on intercooled M1 Procharger kit. It was supposedly a PQ factory install. I know I wouldn't want to do the install with the engine in the boat. It is a very reliable setup, but it is definitely a shoehorn fit. The intercooler is right on top, right out front. I only get about 3-1/2lbs of boost at WOT, and don't go into positive manifold pressure until about 3200-3300RPM. You might run your engine serial numbers past a tech at Merc. They can tell you whether it was built with a forged crank or cast steel. I didn't see where/if you mentioned the vintage of the engine. The transition seems to be 2001-2002 where Merc switched from forged to cast on the crank, and there would appear to have been some on-again, off-again in this period. They do still have the cast pistons, but If you don't over boost them and make sure to avoid detonation, they should be fine.

Thanks. Brad.
