Default baja hull question

I have an 1989 Baja 24 sport, I have been told to remove the build in" trim tab" or hooks in the rear of the boat. This should net 3 to 5 mile gain I was told. Are these speeds realistic and how do I do this with out having the Hull blueprinted. Is it as simple as grinding them out and checking with a long straight edge. I am planning to paint the boat at the same time. We could use some advice on paint and prep work.
