Is this the area that has what they call Flower Pot Bay? Ive always wanted to boat there. A freind of mine purchased a helo shot of his boat in there. It was amazing to see 30ft pillars of stone surounding his boat.

The Flower Pot Islands are just north of Tobermory ony a few miles out in the bay towards Manatoulin. Its 20 minutes by boat (depending how fast your vessel is???) and yes the pillars were carved out by nature and stand erect all along the shoreline of the island(s)
You may stop and hike for the day if you wish to stop and the one and only docking facility but need permission to enter and must sign in. There is NO overnight camping and of course you are responsible for all your waste containers garbage etc as the Parks Commission counts everything!Oh...and no flower picking allowed either :) They are a marvel to see as not many of these structrues exist anywhere else. |
Awesome pics thanks for sharing. I haven't been up there in 20 yrs and my Dad has been wanting to do the trip for the past 4 yrs. I think next summer we will have to do it. How long did the trip take you?
|
Thanks for the pics. They bring back a lot of good memories. I have boated in Michigan my whole life and finally did a North Channel trip 2 years ago with 2 other boats. It was by far the best boating I have ever experienced. If anyone has ever thought about doing a trip in this area, take the time and do it. You will not regret it and will always want to go back.

Thanks for the info you guys. Red Tail did you tow you boat or go up the coast of Lake Huron. I would rather tow to one of the towns on the lower part of the bay, but none of the roads on the west side of Ontario look like a major highway. Does anyone know what 21 is like, it's the main road that hugs the shore. If we were to tow any suggestions on where would be the best place in the lower part of the bay to launch our 43' Black Thunder. If we were to come by boat from the lower part of Lake Huron are there any cut through to the bay before you hit Tobermory, it does not look like but my map is not that detailed. Maybe an international OSO trip should be planned for next summer.:D |
Where are the 1,000 islands?
|
We have done it from lake St Clair it was some of the best boating I have ever done. Once you get to to Tobermory you need to pay close attention to the charts. We went 5 boats and went into some cove that were awsome BUT did go over huge rocks that we just below the boat. Nothing like seeing black bear on the side of the moutains.

That was quite a trip you took, I can't imagine the fuel $$. I just looked at the map and followed the route you must have taken.

We always trailered to Tobermory Ontario (from Western NY). A nice ramp with an easy launch and you were set to explore the peninsula area or head over to the North channel
|
Ms. PatriYacht : We towed up to Detour Village on the eastern tip of the UP and headed into the the North Channel from the west. We made stops in Meldrum Bay (cleared customs ), and Gore Bay, as well as remote anchorages as we went east. Before we headed into the N. Channel, we did a side trip and hit Mackinac Island and the Chain of Lakes for a couple of days. Overall it was great trip.
