Lake St Clair Magnum's
#313
I might be just about to jump into this Magnum resto game.
I may have already done it, and just don't realize it yet.
How nuts am I to be doing this??
Seriously guys, Talk me down if It's too crazy of an idea.
I've only been looking into Mags for about six months, and don't know that much about them. I've been around boats for since I was 10, so 26 years on the water.
I really want to get into an Old school classic boat.
Seems everyone has a Cigarette, Donzi, etc. and I want something a little more unique. Something that only the people that truly love offshore, and classic boats would understand.
I love the look of a tall Lifeline.
I have mechanical skills, but very limited knowledge.
I re-upholstered my last boat myself, and it came out looking professional. (I did the whole thing with a sewing machine I bought just for the project, and taught myself to sew. Did the whole cockpit and sunpad with the sewing machine on a piece of plywood on top my table saw - with a beer close by, and a smoke in my mouth
).
I ran into something, that is being touted as a 28 Maltese.
But I don't know Mag's well enough to know if that is correct.
I'm a little nervous about what I might be getting myself into.
I've only seen a couple photo's, and it's looks pretty rough. Not awful, but it's gonna take some work.
I don't care if the boat doesn't see the water for two years, I need something to putter on in the backyard - and this might actually be within my means. It'll probably take me the next two years to raise the funds it will require as well, but there is plenty of cheap work that can be done in the meantime, and it will occupy my time, and get me off the sofa so-to-speak.
Am I crazy??
I don't wanna say too much, and have some one grab it from under me...

There is nothing crazy about looking for a old school ride and restoring it, I just got back from a ride on the mag just me and the wife........Thankfully the mother in law ,out of the blue came and picked up the little guy ( 4 weeks old)...........
You will nver get more satisfaction then when you can ride your boat that you have touched and turned every nut and bolt on.........THERE IS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT A MAG.............

Thanks for the reassurance!
You're boat looks amazing. And I've been through some of the threads about your re-hab of her.
You should be very proud. Job very well done! It looks great!!
Oh, and congrats on the little one!
My wife is the one pushing me to buy this boat, which is a good thing, and she's also telling me she doesn't expect to be on the water for two years. I could do it sooner, but budget is gonna be the slow down.
Just trying to get an idea of what I'm about to bite off, and can I chew it??
The boat is in your neck-of-the-woods. The pictures suck, and I may do it anyway.
I know you're looking for a new project, and I don't want to hand her over to someone else. It's a 5 hr run for me, and I need to make a decision, and then just come to pick it up.
We haven't finalized a price - still working on that.
I do know what you mean about knowing every last nut and bolt. Something to take pride in.

I know the boat you're talking about and it looks like a pretty original un-molested Maltese........lots of work, but if you want the experience go for it!......

My opinion is that you'll always be money ahead if you buy a boat/car that doesn't need much........I'm in the car resto biz and I see it all the time. That said.....projects are fun!
Good luck.......
Here's my favorite Maltese......

Man go for it..I did everything on Vixen myself except the upholstery,my wife did that.Vixen may not be as nice as some on hear but i wouldnt part with her for any price.Theirs nothing like the feeling you get after you complete a project like this and know every nut, bolt, swich and wire in the darn thing.theirs so many diff. ways you can go,you can keep it orig.like 24 Degree or you can try to modify it like No Cig,Magnum27,Grumpy or Vixen. But no matter what way go you"ll have a ball.

You guys are helping to convince me to do this. As I said, it's strange, but I'm the one nervous about taking this on, and my wife is pushing me to do it. She loves offshore boats and the water (that's how we met), and I think she's tired of hearing me bitsh about not having a boat. I don't have a shop, so I may need to rent some space to do this, or struggle doing it in the backyard.
Mike - you and I might become very good friends if I do this. Maybe you'd let me drop it in your shop and spend my weekends in MI.
Maybe that would save your jones'en for another project of your own.
Beer's always on me!

This Magnum I am very partial too, It's my Mag in race & pleasure form , it started racing under the Damn Yankee name then Showdown, Come Again, after I sold her in 1985 it went back race again, and win just as i sold it called Chemical Reaction. After that unknown??? If she look's a little like the Mag Spirt, or LiL Smidgen the rear hatch came from that Magnum.
