Volvo had a 250, 270, 280 drive's, the higher the number the newer the drive, a 280 Volvo would be better than a 250 Volvo drive. With the Trs Merc, 280 meant 280Hp smallblock, [330], 330Hp bigblock 454cu , ect.
Thanks Mark,
my boats got the 280's marked for the small blocks, just wondering if i spend money on my moters to get more power will my 280's be ok. what i mean is what are they good for.
i could have all the power in the world but will my drives do there job to get the speeds.... what are other mag getting for speeds and what props, i know beckman changed my moters as posted before said they were 320hp

Len your mag rocked when Rich [beakman] had it. If you had traded it in to Mike on that Cig I would have grabed it. I have said this before, the weakest point would be the Trs trans, keep your rpm's down in reverse, and keep the trans oil clean. I have had the same drives and transmisions in my 38' 454cu Scarab and now in my 29' Mirage. I have had a spare set of drives and transmisions for years and never needed them. Stuff dose wear out, so you have to do maintenance.
A friend has a Trs 28' Pantera [ that was the C- T PEPERS race boat] 500hp smallblocks 80+ speeds no problem.
Kevin has the Trs 29' Mirage, Wolverine with Merc 420hp 454cu, 78mph no problem. In your Mag 70 to 75 mph should not be a problem. True todays big power can kill them but Bravo's don't hold up to well either. Have you talk to the guy's at North Bay who set it up for Rich ?? That might be a good start. And with props you just have to try different one's out, to see what your hull likes. It takes much testing to find the right set. On our Skater cat we spent a week at Lake X to find the right set .Just My 2 cent's.

In reverse try to keep it under 1000rpm when docking. 400hp is within reach with today's parts using a 9.5 compression 350cu smallblock. With a cam, intake & carb change, and mild head work should get close to 70mph. I would start with a 21p or 23p Mirage prop and keep rpm's around 5500. You may have all the right stuff already, you just need to tune it in.

Spirit, like my Mag had the floor cut out just like nocig's, because of the rear fuel tanks thats all you could open up. It did help get you a little lower, with the bolster you felt like you could run in any water.

After a closer look at nocigs, you could only cut back to the front of the rear fuel tank bulk head. The opening was just big enough for a size 12 shoe. If you just had front tanks, open it up like Mike's.

My buddy wants to do a race set up as i spoke about... he is in love with the spirit and wants to copy it...... and now hes got me thinking of a 3 man set up aswell and doing the hatch all the way to the back of the bolsters like others???????????????

Len,
I am sure I had 23 mirage props when I sold it to Larry.
It originally had 21 cleavers and as I remember I liked the mirages better.
