Now the real question. Its that time of year again and Im thinking about taking it up the river for the fireworks. What do youse all think about that. How crowded is crowded ( ie how early do I need to get there) and do i have a prayer of navigating my way out at night with the "traffic". I saw the tight channel and of course after the fireworks 2230 would be low tide. And also any good anchoring spots ( you know out of the way but able to get out when its time) Any input would be of great help.

Keep up with the tips-

Hey welcome to the area. I'll let the others answer your question because I'm not the river expert. Hopefully I'll get to know it better this season.
Where do you keep your boat?

When your ready to hit the open Ocean I'll help you anyway I can. Good luck with the new boat.

Capo,
Does the Coast Guard give out some type of cards to friends and family like the NYPD PBA cards to help get out of tickets??

In that boat you'll have no trouble with the traffic! We ought to see you! I have gone many years in boats from my old 13 whaler to the current scarab. If you have time get there early but not really required. We usually get a pretty good raft up , think we had like 18 last year though some friends on the family plan opted not to raft with us for obvious reasons of too many nut cases aor they were just plain afraid to have too much fun! I grew up on the river and pretty sure I already hit every sand bar out there between blow boating and powerboating. Best thing is follow one of the fishing boats out , they know the water.

Hit one of them thar moving sand bars. First time out in my own boat back it '84 I took off one ear of the prop on rocks between the 2 rivers Learned that lesson the hard way.
The traffic isn't all that bad, nothing like the fireworks in NYC. If you are there by 8pm you have plenty of time. Then when the fireworks are over just hang an extra 30 - 45 minutes and you'll be able to follow the end of the crazies out and know where the channel is. It gets a little tough just east of the Oceanic bridge, Panther knows the way he is the KING of the river.
Where are you keeping the boat? We're on the Shrewsbury, we always have open dock space if you need a place to keep the boat.....and if there are boats here we just raft them up

There's a lot of good people boating around here, welcome to the area.

So hunster the queen didn't make it out.....once a queen always a queen

Thanks,

With the quick courteous reply i have no doubt about having a great time with good knowledge.

Currently trailering the boat from the house (Middletown) to Atl Highlands ramp. But after the 4th, got a slip in holgate down on LBI. Just feeling things out right now, and hopefully not feeling the bottom (yey charts)

The Queen just called and is still working on that boat. Even with 2 kids he could have built the space shuttle by now. Maybe a test tonight.

I'm in Middletown too, I guess we're neighbors.

Anway, since I'm considered the local river resident I can tell you that you shouldn't have any problems up the Navesink as long as you stay in the channel.

Just run the river a few times and remember the course, if someone looks like they're out of the channel trust your instincts.

Missed the fireworks last year due to a drive failure on July 2nd. I'll be at the fireworks this year if I have to row there!

Enjoy the area and if you have any questions just let me know.
