The more power/speed thing out of a boat is always a tough decision. How much faster do you want to go and then figure 20hp a side to do it. Also, how much time do you spend at or near w.o.t. to use your additional power and money you put in to it. IMO, if your engines are running great and reliable and you don’t plan on having your boat a long time I would leave it alone and put the money towards the next boat that’s already faster. The problem with boats are whatever you do to them you rarely get your money back for any of the upgrades/power improvements etc. when you go to sell.

PROWRENCH 10-28-2013 02:32 PM

I've been having this same battle, thinking about putting 525's in the 300, or just buying a faster boat. As stated, I think it's probably smarter to leave well enough alone in order to not lose your a$$ when selling. The value added is only to you when you still own it. If I can do it for less than 10 grand though I still might because 90 is way better than 80! :evilb:

Pwraddr 10-28-2013 08:13 PM

You can put raylar heads and cam and get close to 100 per side for less than 10k. The vyper test I read with 500efi went 86 in salt. Those are 470 HP. I think with 525 it would be close or at 90. Darin Morgan (he developed the Raylar heads at Profiler) said 65 hp with just changing the heads.

The chine walk worries me at that speed. I wish some one has put bigger power in and could provide some feedback.

PROWRENCH 10-29-2013 08:08 AM

The problem is I don't trust the cast bottom end of the 496. Cranks, rods, pistons,...might as well go 525's. If I could find the same deal AJ did, and sell my HO's for the same as he did or maybe a little more since mine have half the hours, then it's less than 10k. Deals don't seem to come my way like that though usually.

There is definitely a concern with the vyper hull at 90 IMHO. Not putting it down in any way, but I have driven them at 80, and not even close to the stability of a 300. This is where the John Cosker design shines.

Which models did Cosker have a hand in developing? I thought it was only the SC series.

I thought it was only the 300. My understanding is PQ called him in when they couldn't get it right with the 300 raptor. I guess there are a couple raptors out there that were concepts and handled like crap.

Yep,,that is correct...
PQ tried a couple of times with the Raptor and also the Predator and finally gave up and had Cosker come up with the twin step Revenge hull,,they did use the original deck..

the 340 and 380 did not start as a twin step hulls,,both straight V bottoms and back in 97/98 the added the step inserts in the molds..

I just think the 300 gives a great ride,,I would have to say for its size its the best riding boat PQ built..

Great info. Who did the 32SC and 28SC molds? Just curious, I like the boat.

Also, I noticed the 340 & 380 molds have the steps integrated in rather than inserts so it appears that maybe some molds were made later than 97/98? . Were there any handling issues with boats that came from the latest molds?

they only had one set of molds for each,,,,,the steps (inserts) were made and added to the straight V bottom molds to make the step versions..

Anyone know where I could get a PowerQuest sticker for a vehicle? I can't seem to find much online.

pqjack 11-08-2013 06:24 AM

last time I looked, there were some on EBay...

PROWRENCH 11-08-2013 07:11 AM

A buddy of mine makes them [email protected]

Josh LaFountain 11-11-2013 11:49 AM

anyone ever heard anything about a predator 24' viper? a friend of mine is looking at one for his first boat. its older,, a 90 model i think. they are wanting to trade it to him for his rock crawler. it has new interior, a small cuddy, extension box, dual ram hydro steer, and a healthy 496 carb engine and the guy promises no more than 20hr on build. says it GPS 76. are they a solid boat or junk? ive never heard of them.

Josh LaFountain 11-11-2013 11:57 AM

he only has about 6k in his crawler. My main concern is that he gets something with a solid hull. the boat dosent look bad for the age but you never know how its built.

Drock78 11-12-2013 02:05 AM

There's a thread in the resto section from last winter when he was doing all the work. He pry has over 6k into the motor and pry another 3-4k into interior.

Josh LaFountain 11-12-2013 08:34 AM

cool. ill tell my buddy to look it up. thanks.

Josh where have you been hiding? You were all over this board at first, then, gone.

PROWRENCH 11-13-2013 07:18 AM

Wow, 70 hrs is a ton. It was a cold year for us up north, only put 30 hrs on.

Drock78 11-13-2013 11:34 AM

Hour meter isn't running while hanging at the sand bar...lol

True, then it would be probably be well into the 300-400 range

AJ POWERPLAY 11-13-2013 10:09 PM

I think Drocks hour meter actually goes in reverse it sits on the trailer so much... :lolhit:

Josh LaFountain 11-14-2013 09:53 AM

the long weekends at cumberland for the poker runs really rack up the hrs.

I can go below and pull a beer out of the fridge at wide open throttle......the boat tracks dead straight and there is zero chine walking!

The only way the boat gets squirly is if it's trimmed to the moon and we know these boats don't need, nor like a lot of trim.

The only time it might get a bit squirly is if it is way over trimmed but we know these boats don't like to be over trimmed.

Edit to my post, I just asked the wife if she ever remembers the boat getting squirly and she said no never, just the 280, so I'm mistaking the chine walk to only my 280 and not the 380.
I have a really good solid hull.
Does your chine walk?

Need4SpeedGTCS 12-15-2013 07:55 AM

I haven't had any chine walk but it does feel very light at top speed...

Revinchevy 12-15-2013 02:31 PM

I found one too. not very good but I watch it every once in a while.

No chine walk here! What's up ladies?? Have a merry Christmas, hopefully everyone gets the stuff we need for our boats over the holiday :D
