While I have my AT torn down and getting all redone, I am rebuilding my transom assemblies. What would you do to remove all of the corrosion? Would you just sandblast them down to bare aluminum? Just remove the corrosion and leave as much stock paint? Or chemically strip them?

I’ve never been able to shoot awl grip without getting a sag/run just when I thought I had it nailed.

Wow on all acounts, the colors are awesome, this is one of the best restoration threads. Pretty quick she'll be painted, on the trailer and outside, you'll be trying to angle it just right in the sun for glory shots. Once painted you have slap some caution tape on the floor and rope it off with a new shop rules sign posted every ten feet around the perimeter, rule #1 stay away from the boat #2 unless you have been dedusted, degreased, issued a tyvek suit, washed your feet off in the tub at the bottom of the ladder and given written permission, stay away from the boat.

I'd try to take them completely apart and blast every nook and cranny in a media cabinet if you can, then use some good etching primer before painting them with a quality paint system. I'd leave the original paint on the areas where they aren't corroded. Only blast the corrosion Sometimes it's easier and cheaper to just find some new or used parts that aren't corroded and use them.

On my 30, it was a freshwater boat but it sat in the water without anodes and actually had some light corrosion on the gimbals too but wasn't as bad as the trim cylinders. If I knew then what I know now I'd have replaced the trim cylinders, functionally they were fine, but me being as obsessive as I am, We painted them probably 4 times in 5 years, but corrosion kept creeping out of places I couldn't get to. It can be a losing battle.

Lol, I just did a search in the drive section and found that was the same advice I gave someone 10yrs ago after I redid the drives on my Panther. I blasted them, filled all the pits (salt water boat), acid etch primed them and hit them with a single stage PPG paint. Still in good shape.

Rookie, when I came to this forum many years ago I thought your 30 scarab was one of the coolest old school boats I had ever seen.

Wow, I don't know what to say to that. Thanks! That means a lot. It validates a lot of the work I put into that boat.

We’ve been dodging tornadoes down here in Alabama the past few weeks.very busy at the shop lately. I’ve got some more done to the trailer, also got the boxes, and rings painted, also today, got the hatch painted. The fade looks better in person than in these photos. Our fade doesn’t have as much of the raddish in it than the star 1 boat. I like this better, we’ll see what it looks like in the sun, we’ll redo it if we have to...
