I had the same problem 2 years ago. The inlet screen was clogged. Mine eventually plugged the injector screens. The filter Dixie Doug mentioned is what prevented further problems.

It is on the lower R/H side of the engine. You are looking for the seawater pump. You should have seen it when you replaced the belt. the belt also turns this pump.

Just a thought. When you change the oil filter it is difficult to keep oil from running down on the exhaust manifold. This will cause a strong smell for a while, If you have done this recently.

Raylar is correct, everyone that has a 496 should have a scan tool. Another thing to consider is the PCM 555 service manual. These items will save allot of grief in the long run.
