THE 3.0L engines (i.e. 300 promax, 300x, 250xs, ect) are very reliable. The gearcase is the week link in all of the high performance outboards. But if you change gear oil on a regular basis they seem to hold up fairly well.

waterboy222 09-01-2010 12:53 PM

Don, What do you consider to be "a regular basis" for gear oil changes?

I am sure I am a bit conservative but I change my gear oil every 2 to 3 times out. Everytime I drain the oil I do find a little water in them. While this seems like a lot of gear oil rememeber the RH only holds 1.25 qts and the LH only hold .5qts.

waterboy222 09-01-2010 01:14 PM

Wow, I had no idea the quantitys were so small!

I wish! Its a 24' slip! The little cruiser is a 31 and itll barely fit into that 30' slip. I gotta stay in the 24' and under so I can get a hoist in there. Its already going to be a PITA trying to back in a 2 stroke race motor into a tight slip in rough water and a mostly drunk crew of deckhands..

Quinlan 09-02-2010 03:12 PM

FYI we are having a party in our cove Sunday with all the dock neighbors and anybody else. Gonna try to tie boats across the cove.
Spread the word.

Anyone know who bought the 24 Skater dressed in Monopoly wraps? Broker called me back on it and said it sold and was headed to LOTO for $25k. Boat looked brand new from end to end... Woulda been all over it had I known he hadn't listed it under SKATER on boat trader, grrrr

24 Skater with v8 Evinrudes on it?

waterboy222 09-09-2010 11:09 AM

Says he'd sell without power, but theres plenty of better buys out there for no-power 24's. Ones that have already been updated. I have no interest in a v8 evinrude powered 24, just thought it was an odd setup and would post it for some discussion.

Its up here for sale for 30

apache727 09-10-2010 11:38 AM

I like v8s... I think its a pretty sick boat. You may have prob finding some parts but those motors are cheap to replace. My friend's hydrostream has a 400hp V8 and it's nasty!! If the interior is really nice and the motors run perfect that's not too bad of a deal ...

Id have one in the driveway right now if some of these guys would get reasonable and not just "well it was *just* redone and heres every receipt plus I want what I put into it and another $20k because it looks the way I wanted it to look".... sigh..

And then theres the guy whos 24 is rotting in the back yard and thinks he couldnt turn lose of it for less than $65k because he saw a 28 listed at $75k and its "just a few feet smaller, but basically the same boat"..

From what I can tell, theres two types of 24's available. Pre-update and Recent Update. The pre'update owners want $24k and under. The recently-updated owners want roughly $1.1m (give or take)

I got all winter I guess...

Tlihou 09-14-2010 05:53 PM

Waterboy222, You hit the nail on the head my friend!!!!!! Couldn't have said it better myself. I do have one question for you guys??? What do you think of a talon 25 in comparison to the skater. I'm torn between one here in Canada for 45grand. Or looking hard over the winter for a skater 24 for less than 1.1!!!! Here's the link to the talon. http://summerstownmarina.com/boat.cfm?ID=177

Cheers,

waterboy222 09-15-2010 09:53 AM

The talon isnt a true cat. They have a center sponson/pod and a REALLY strange controls setup. The seats are moved to the port side a little and the throttles/shifters are tucked under the gunnel. A real hassle in my opinion. Also it will have lower freeboard than the 24. If you want the better ride, handling and speed, the 24 Skater would be the way to go.. Plus for $45k, you could have almost ANY of the 24's on the market right now. Theres a few of them that are listed in that range and probably will get close to it at the sale.

That talon is pretty, but under the paint, you're lookin at an entirely different boat..

There have been a couple made with a full tunnel. One of my friends has one and it runs really strong.

Dont the new ones have a Skater bottom anyways? Or was that liberators 25? I can't remember..

I should have clarified, the one that he posted wasn't a full tunnel, thats why I mentioned the pod. ..

Liberators have the Skater Bottom. Yep, you are right about the pod for rough water. But, if I was on a small/ smooth lake I would really look at that talon. That would be a sweet setup. Personally I like the looks of the 25 talon over alot of the boats in the 23 to 26 ft size range.

waterboy222 09-15-2010 10:16 AM

If the boat was listed in the mid 30's, I'd put it in the shopping range. But for $45k, you're gettin into high-end 24 or low-end 28 territory..

Very True.

Thx for the info lads!!! Greatly appreciated!!! As for the center pod?? Is that a better setup for rough or smooth water conditions??? New to the cat style and boating in general. Getting off the motorbike and on the water for a while. Love the 24 skater as my first choice. What's the fuel tank sizes in either of these boat talon or skaters??? Wife keeps wanting to know!! She's only worried about the operating expenses of owning a twin outboard.

Cheers,

Center pods are good for smooth water. They can make for a hard ride in rough water.

Tlihou 09-15-2010 12:15 PM

Could get it down from 45 easily but wanna make the right choice alll the way around. Anybody chk the boat out at all??? What do invite think would be a good offer if it makes the cut???

Cheers,

Operating expenses have been quite low for me... Boat runs on 93oct and they sell premium plus oil at walmart for 19.95. I would imagine it's a lot cheaper and more efficient than a 100+mph i/o boat.. I think my boat holds 150 total gallons. I've had 130+ in there before.

Its worth whatever you'll pay for it... Good luck shopping!

I have a set up question. I have a Motion 25 with new 300xs. I now have 13 hours on them and I am only seeing 108. I am turning the props out, bolted to the transom, with offshore midss. The prop centerline is not quite 1 1/2" above and I have lots of water pressure. This week I plan rotating the props in, but I should I also install the manual jack plates. If I had 300x I would but the 300xs' are about 50 pounds heavier.
any ideas, My goal is to get to 112 mph. Oh I am running 15x34 three blade mercury cleavers.
