The 24 thread..

Post some pics of your favorite 24's... I know theres quite a few cool ones out there and they dont get a lot of press becuase of the 28 and this being an offshore site..

Also, throw out any opinions or perceptions youve had of the 24 or little known knowledge!

waterboy222 08-23-2010 12:46 PM

also, does anyone know any history on an ex-race boat named "its bad" or "bad", somethin like that, out of the st pete area?

Ryan Beckley 08-23-2010 02:01 PM

This must be one of the nicest Skater 24 around.

I found it in the classifieds section

How does the 24 handle 2-3' chop? And what speeds with the 300's?

waterboy222 08-23-2010 07:19 PM

ya, thats the old "im bad" raceboat.. One of the boats that inspired this thread..

apache727 08-24-2010 11:09 AM

Ryan did an awesome job on the wrap i think it made the boat! Runs awesome with 300s. The idle and run perfect. I've only gone out for the top speed a couple times. out of the box with 31p 4blades 104 on gps on the limiters. with "34p" 4blades i bought off scream and cry it only ran 108 on gps again on the limiters. My goal was 110. If she doesn't sell and I find the right prop she should be there.

The 300 promaxes are 2-strokes, right?

Yes. The are 3.0l v6 efi's with alternators. I've had 3 so far and I love them.

waterboy222 08-24-2010 02:09 PM

Whats the difference in the x and promax 300s?
All the info I can find on google is pretty skewed and unorganized..

apache727 08-24-2010 02:40 PM

as far as I know about 20hp and they turn higher rpm. They also have the newer stlye intakes. Usually promax blocks are painted black and x's aren't... for some reason mine aren't painted either...

The 300x's have different port timming, a little more compression and a different fuel injection system. The 300x's make around 340HP and the 300 Promax's make around 300HP. Both great motors.

davidmercury 08-24-2010 03:58 PM

You've got to love the racing history of this 24 and now the restoration. Its a great testiment to the tough Skater hull.

Are you looking for one? I know of one for sale here in Virginia.

waterboy222 08-30-2010 01:42 PM

Brian,
Yes, very much so.. Which one is it? I may already have contacted the owner.

Planetwarmer 08-30-2010 10:19 PM

Why do people run the 2.5s instead of the 300s? Any advantages of having 2.5s over the 300s? Any disadvantages (other than HP)? I really dont know the difference between the 2 motors except the displacement and HP.

Weight

waterboy222 08-30-2010 10:48 PM

Price, length and lack of offshore bracket was what I heard.

What accounts for the weight savings?

waterboy222 08-30-2010 10:55 PM

280 hp is 375#, 300 is 635# depending on year and all that.

This ones my favorite 24 out there.. Tried to catch up with him at LOTO this weekend but he was an early riser I guess.

Mike's 24 is the nicest outboard skater ever built. The detail is amazing. We ran with him up in Sarasota during the offshore race weekend. Runs strong and flys level.

apache727 08-31-2010 01:22 PM

300 Promaxs are 465#s each according to Mercury

waterboy222 08-31-2010 01:36 PM

My bad, I was looking at the optimax or whatever its callled

I don't believe the Opti weighs that much either, its just a 3 litre with a few extra parts, maybe you were looking at Verado??

waterboy222 08-31-2010 02:00 PM

Who knows.. I typed in mercury 300 weight and thats what popped up..I thought that seemed significantly heavier!

rchevelle71 08-31-2010 02:49 PM

Here is the weight of a Opti 300xs...........

Weight (lbs / kg) (L) 505 lbs. (229 kg) (XL) 517 lbs. (235 kg) (XXL) 534 lbs. (242 kg)

Here is the Verado, which is a 4 stroke, would just be WRONG to mount those on a 24 Skater..............

Dry Weight * Lightest model available 635lbs / 288kg

waterboy222 08-31-2010 02:53 PM

From a *top speed only* stand point, who would be the winner in a 2 stroke 300 vs 4 stroke 300 shootout?

2 Stroke hands down.

waterboy222 08-31-2010 03:05 PM

couldnt you run a larger prop on the 4 stroke because of the torque and get a higher top speed?

I know nothin of the two, just a curiousity gettin to me!

As of right now the sportmaster lower is not offered with the 4stroke so that alone is a big fator in the speed difference. Also the midsection on the 4 strokes are not heavy duty enough to take the abuse of a 100mph boat.

Great info, I was wondering what the differences were... on paper, a a 375 verado looks mighty enticing, but in reality it wouldnt work!

rchevelle71 08-31-2010 03:28 PM

Not to mention the ability to run higher rpm with a 2 stroke, and not damage anything.
