I agree with Ron it will be a dog but I bet you always make it back home.. You will likely have setup gear case and prop issues too. Not to mention we will pull your "Skater Brother" card |

Is the problem not enough gear or prop to get the boat moving? |

WIth out sportmasters or nose cones of some sort I bet won't get out of the 90's.
Motors would also need solid mounts also. How would you install rear tie bar? I do not think anyone even makes a rear tie bar kit for that application. At 505lbs why not go with the 300xs's. Not saying it's not possible but would be a lot of unknowns. Why are you thinking about the engine combination? Just curious. |
IMHO - the lost time on the water and uphill battle trying to get other mfg's power to work on a 28 Skater could never justify the results... then try to sell it when the time comes.
The 28 with 300xs' is the go-to package for speed, ecomomy and reliability. I'm not saying it couldn't be a good package (not to mention cool factor if you liked the look of the E's) but someone like Double Rigged could probably rhyme off part numbers and dimensions that will put this combo (28+300xs) over the century mark before fine tuning and keep the CG where it should be... |

New listing 28 Skater
Looks like a nice rehab. Are the thru hull fittings on the port bow for a ballast tank? Also if tanks were redone I would assume the bulkhead Behind the front seats had to be cut. It can be repaired as strong as before but would definitely make tank repair mare challenging.
I bet he gets close to asking price. It's amazing how values have increased on these in just a few years. Good luck to the seller and future buyer. |

Anyone else notice that us outboard guys have taken over the Skater forum :party-smiley-004: When I went looking for this thread I counted and there were only like 4 threads on the first page that weren't outboard related LOL
|
yep...lets keep it up and maybe will get merc to build some 500+ outboards that don't weigh a ton!!! Outboards seem to be making a comeback in the cats!!! Maybe my 308 will double in value LOL.

Mercury sent me a happy today! |
Nice glad to see them doing something!
|
thought at first it was the Miami boat show debut info for the 500R :eekdrop: had to put on my cheaters and look again:lolhit:
|
if it was a release notice for 500's there would probably be a lot of upset people getting them unless it came with a heck of an upgrade offer.

A bunch of us are getting together this Saturday to remember a very good friend, Jon "Shortbus" Bloom. We are gonna launch in Benicia and run out to Stockton for lunch. We will do 140-150 miles on Saturday.

The first 28s to be built in several years are on the floor back at Skater right now. It will be cool to see some new 28s rigged with the latest hardware! The next 318 to be produced is also getting close to completion. The last couple 318s went out to be rigged by others, and I'm not sure if this next one will be rigged at Skater or not either. It's nice to see outboard boats coming out of Pete's place again! Amazing how the floorspace is dominated with 388 and up boats back there. |
visited the factory only once when the 28 was there getting tanks repaired...Peter was out but we did get a tour. my 28 looked small in there.

I have heard there are several 28's on order and per Pete Boden's facebook at least one with 400r's.
Looks like Skater is going to join the 130mph club! |
Where is everyone at? I have been using mine. I installed the verado steering pump. Love it, one finger driving.
Lets play! |
Zero, How did you end up wiring it? Did you use the control module or dash switches like I did?
|
I used dash switches, there were unused ones from the old 2.5 high pressure pumps. Supplied both from the ignition switch so i would no forget and leave them on. There is no load on the two switch wires. A great addition. The Merc way added to much weight. Watching the voltmeter when running itd never below 13.5-14 volts

Good call! :ernaehrung004:

Remove the capilanno, install a Charlyn helm for two rams, you will need a steering stem also to mount the Charlyn to. I did not want to look for adapters to get from verado to jic hose fittings so I cut off the merc verado end on the pump shock hose and crimped a jic onto the merc hose. Then it's easy, use existing hoses to rear rams, add pressure hose from pump shock hose to Charlyn pressure port, add return line from helm to pump. It is self bleeding like the steering on my Cigarette. I blew out the old fluid with air pressure. I mounted the pump up front over the tunnel close to the helm. Ran #6 wire to port battery, connected control to two switches. Turned it on, full left to right turns to bleed it out. It works great if you remember to turn it on.

He broke out the BRAND NEW 300x motors that were still in the box and we are making them 15" motors. |

Yes it should work, you would have to adapt your hoses, to the oddball verado helm fittings. I did not want the weight of the merc twin wiring harness, isolator, and third battery.
Isolator? Is the Verado a full time system? Thanx for the help. :-) |
Yes the merc way, which is the best way, installs a isolator, and a third battery. And a shipload of cables. To much weight for me. Yes the pump runs all the time. After idle one alternator handles it fine. After all we make very small input changes

What steering system are all you guys running that you're needing electric assist? I had Zieger rams with Capilano helm in my last 28, and had absolutely no issues at all with the steering. Sure, it wasn't as easy to turn the wheel as in my 30 with power steering, but you could certainly turn the wheel quicker than the boat could handle at any speed. Just wondering, because I've heard complaints with the small IMCO steering rams.
