Default Trailer Hitch Ball Size for 32SS

I have to go pick my 32 SS MCOB up next weekend, and the guy I'm buying it from, doesn't know the exact size. Is it a
2 5/8 or 2 3/4, does anybody know? I don't even know who makes the trailer, I just have the five letters from the title, which are VANGU. Does anyone know that maker? All help is greatly appreciated

I 2nd that ! If it has an aluimuim trailer you might need a drop hitch. I run mine with an 8" drop turned (UP) on a full size Chevy pick-up. Even with the airbags pumped up and truck leveled out. This is due to the fact that the hyd. brake accuator is on top of the trailer frame.

As mentioned, you'll likely need a mild turn up hitch bar on a stock truck to get close to level. I have an aluminum trailer and run a mild drop on my hitch bar, but that is partly because I've replaced my factory hitch on the Chevy with a Putnam XDR and it is now a few inches higher than it used to be.

Make sure that all your towing equipment is rated to handle the load including the hitch ball. The 32SS is likely close to 10k pounds with fuel and gear on the trailer, no less than 9000 for sure. Most factory hitches are NOT rated to tow this much without weight distributing gear, regardless of what the truck is capable of. My 2007 3/4 ton Chevy came with a 7500 LB hitch even though the truck can safely tow upwards of 14k pounds according to the manual.

It sounds like a Vanguard trailer. You will almost definately need a 2 5/16" ball, and your truck's TOW RATING, HITCH, DRAWBAR, and BALL will all need to be rated for 10,000 lbs. with a Weight Carrying hitch setup.

Thanks for all the info guys. I drive a 2000 Ford Excursion 7.3 diesel, so towing shouldn't be an issue. I've towed my dads 28 MCOB numerous times, just wasn't sure if it was the same size hitch. You all say at least a 10000lb rating right?

The 288 is considerably lighter than the 32SS.

Yes I would recommend 10k min rating for the 32SS. The excursion is likely rated for that weight, but double check all of your hitch equipment. You might be surprised what is on there from the factory.

Hey, no worries. I'm ready for a standing post in the Trucks and Trailers forum for "hitch basics".
