Superboat 30 Y2K! Me three!
I’m pretty excited! I’m getting back into boating after a hiatus. Back 2010 Selling my Y2K was the right thing to do. But I sure have missed it. Having boating on the brain I’m always looking, bigger and smaller, Center console or down east style. A wide spectrum of boats each with its own attributes. I keep coming back to the Y2K. I love its size, rough water attributes, in my eyes great looks and trailerability. This will be my third build with John, and most importantly I feel comfortable doing business with him and appreciate Ricks talent in the shop. I also have the desire when I’m on the water to be able to get places in a timely fashion. I wanted to do something a little different, I pondered the 860/6 Drive. But this time around we decided to go with twin 300R‘s. After reading about the 300R’s attributes and performance results on the installs thus far, JC and I are pretty optimistic. The 300R’s seem to be in very short supply though I’m patient. Let’s see how things go! |
A new Y2K with the latest V8 outboards, very cool. Probably gonna need lots of pics. :) RR |
I hope Rick is as generous with his time forthcoming with pictures and documentation as he did with my first Y2K build as this Superboat comes to life! |
Should be a great combo. Please post any pics you have of this.
|
Congrats! I know this will be a great boat. I bought Superstitious' Y2K from him back in 2010. I think it was one of the nicest Y2K's ever built. I miss it too. When is the new boat going to be ready?
|
When did Rick come back to superboat? ......... I thought he was down south doing work.
|
Thanks Dave! It’s going to be a few months off, again the availability of the engines Could be an issue. Funny I looked back and pulled the trigger back in February 2005 on superstitious and I didn’t pick the boat up to the second week of August, that was a busy year for JC and Y2K builds. JC has a few things in the works currently. This past February, when I first called him, I told him he needed to wish me a happy anniversary and in the discussion about the possibility of a new boat ensued. John said he’ll be 3 1/2 months... We shall see. |
I didn’t get a direct answer from John but Rick’s been back a while say a year or two though he’s been absent from both OSO and scream and fly. I have initially tried to PM Rick on both sides but he hadn’t responded but it was certainly nice to see him back at it at Superboat. |
Did they start your boat yet? I saw some pics on Facebook of a new Y2K going into the mold.
|
I’m not on Facebook. I would assume so. One of the first orders of business that I’m considering is maybe doing Coosa board for the stringers. When having a discussion with John about using that in the build. The topic turn to using it in the transome. He felt there was to much flex and created some issues in a previous cc build. He recommended against it with the setback. |
I’m in st Lucia for a weeks vacation and I haven’t talked to john in about a week. Dave you peaked my interest! |
I joined Facebook many years ago to check up on someone. It worked, she became my 'ex'. Now I use Facebook occasionally to check up on boats.........:) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ad2bbf6ee.jpeg |
So I guess the cat’s out of the bag. I’m doing another black/white boat! |
Contemplated red canopies.... chickened out. Staying with black. |
Sweet build. I'm looking/dreaming of something very similar with twin outboards. Do any of you previous owners recall if the height of Y2K boat on trailer would clear a 7ft height garage door?

Congrats on the new build. I had a Thoroughbred with twin 260s' on a Porta-bracket many moons ago. Twins will generally always get you home. Subscribed.
|
Thank you bulletbob. Spoke with John to give Rick of my phone number perhaps I can coerce him into posting the process. JC still uses a flip phone :lolhit: |
Well I stopped by Superboat Today! Saw JC, Rick and helper Max. John jr stopped by with his bud Mike Demino a boat rigger. Not untill I asked his last name did I realize he is the son of John Demino aka “Lightspeed” who helped rig my prior two Superboats. So a big shout out to Lightspeed down in Fla!! Back to the build... The deck has been sprayed and glassed! Rick was laying down the Divincel 305 high density coring for the deck when I arrived. This build is along the same lines as my last build, lightweight race layup, though this time around. as I mentioned, coosa board (already on hand)will be used instead of wood in Too Superstitious’ construction!!! Rick did say he had some pictures he’d forward when he has a chance.https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...95ee2bd2c.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d911adac9.jpeg |
If you considered the M8 860, why the 300's versus the 350 or 400?
|
The weight savings was a consideration over the 400’s . And great torque the300’s are producing. The 860 would double the engine/ drive cost. The 30’s with twins have always run well. The last Y2K with twin 250’s ran 87 out of the box as per JC. I’m contemplating using Bobs machine Double jack on this set up. This time around Instead of using a stainless marine bracket out back John will likely build in-house a custom bracket. |
Good luck with your build...it should be awesome. When you were at SB, did you see their new 21 CC (called 207)? Did they finish it ?

Sorry loading out of sequence but you get the idea !! Black is beautiful. |
Looks great! Is the bottom going to be black and red?
|
No as I mentioned Dave, the photos loaded out of sequence The last photo was actually the bare mold. The red is actually an Insert he put in the original mold to create the steps You can see the sides masked off prior to spraying the white bottom and trim along the top edge. Then he’ll mask off the white and spray the black hull sides. Next he lays some fiberglass on the inside Which you can see i f you look close on the previous pictures. Next Will be the divencell coring and then another layer of fiberglass. Then the coosa board stringers
|
^^ Ah, OK I got it now. I saw your thread about Rolls Axle. That was a pretty nice trailer.
|
Yes I’d like to get the trailer in process things are coming along I need to follow up in another week or two and see how how he’s progressing and getting his act together down there. . |
Bobs machine double jack has been ordered. There will be delay in getting that as they are in the midst of moving to a larger facility and having to set back up. We could be waiting four weeks. We will want that in house prior to building a custom set back. Also Everett performance has stopped making a tilt helm for the capilano manual steering. I had the tilt helm on my last Y2K and liked it a lot. From what I understand it’s quite envolved and labor intensive read(expensive) as the capilano unit itself needs to come apart and the shaft modified. I’ll be speaking with them again on Monday and discuss the possibilities. No word on motors yet. Argh...., Ordered 2 simrad NSS EVO3 displays for both driver and passenger. |
