AUSTIN, Texas - A 70-foot-long double-deck party boat is rubble after its propane tanks exploded and sent the burning empty vessel adrift for several hundred yards on Austin's Lady Bird Lake.

No one was hurt in the Sunday fire. The boat that had been moored at a marina next to a downtown Austin hotel.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Thayer Smith says no cause was determined immediately but arson was a possibility.



Damage is estimated at $1 million. The explosion and fire also damaged two smaller vessels and the dock where they were berthed.

Firefighters waded into the lake, using a hook attached to a long pole to grab the drifting boat and pull it to shore. Smith told the Austin American Statesman the owner would be responsible for removing the wreckage.
